Crepe Myrtle comes in some 200 varieties, but the best burl specimens come from Oregon. As with many other burls, there are natural voids, which for me enhance the beauty of the specimen. This one ranges from tan, to orange to red. The microcosm of swirls is reminiscent of fine marble.
I used banded segmentation with African Wenge to achieve contrast. However, I carved voids into the Wenge to extend the natural voids of the Myrtle, so as to integrate the patterns and bring them together.
