XIII Days of Suicide

SUICIDE VI

Sigmund Freud (May 6, 1856–September 23, 1939)

++LIFE SUMMARY++

He was a Jewish-Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist who co-founded the psychoanalytic school of psychology. Freud is best known for his theories of the unconscious mind, especially involving the mechanism of repression; his redefinition of sexual desire as mobile and directed towards a wide variety of objects; and his therapeutic technique, especially his understanding of transference in the therapeutic relationship and the presumed value of dreams as sources of insight into unconscious desires.
He is commonly referred to as "the father of psychoanalysis" and his work has been highly influential in the masses' imagination — popularizing such notions as the unconscious, defense mechanisms, Freudian slips and dream symbolism — while also making a long-lasting impact on fields as diverse as literature, film, Marxist and feminist theories, literary criticism, philosophy and psychology. However, some of his theories remain widely disputed.
Sigmund Freud was born in Freiberg, Moravia, 6 May 1856. Due to his talents, which was obvious from a very early stage of his childhood, his parents favored him over his other sisters or brothers, and even though they were very poor, they offered everything in order to feed his intellect. As a result of this, Freud did extremely well during his 8 first years of school, but at the age of 17, he had to move to the University in Vienna because of the strong anti-Semitism in Austria at the time.
He married in 1886, after the opening of a private clinic, specializing in nerve and brain damage. After using hypnosis on his neurotic patients for a long period, he abandoned this form of treatment, in favor of a better treatment, where he let the patients talk about anything they wanted.
In his 40s, Freud himself suffered from many cases of psychosomatic diseases as well as many kinds of fears, and during this period he applied many of his theories on himself, including psychoanalysis and dream interpretation. Through this self-analysis he managed to discover the cause of his psychical suffering.
After having published books in 1900 and 1901, Freud became quite popular, and a circle of supporters developed in the following period, however, he chose to disregard the meanings of those who were skeptical to his theories. Because of this, Freud even gained a few direct opponents, the most famous being Carl Jung.
In 1930 Freud received the Goethe Prize, as an appreciation towards his great contribution to psychology. 3 years later the Nazis took control of Germany and most of his books were burned by the S.A. Because of the new regime, Freud also had to move with his family to London.

++SUICIDAL DEATH++

"The goal of all life is death." – Sigmund Freud

Freud was an intense smoker, and had to go through more than 30 operations during his life, due to mouth cancer. Eventually, he was so tired of the illness that he asked his doctor to help him with assisted suicide.

Skinned body – Expresses great amount of pain and suffering, mental physical and emotional that is unbearable.

Cigar on his hand – Freud smoked cigar everyday, and had cancer by doing so.

Pocket watch – Freud uses a pocket watch to hypnotize his patients and this symbolizes his occupation as a neurologist and psychiatrist.

Pen and pad paper – like most researchers would do, Freud brings about his pad and pen where ever he goes taking notes from patients and writing theories.

Syringe – when Freud was on his death bed, the pain caused by his cancer was far too great to endure. He then requested his doctor to help him commit suicide by injecting a dose of morphine.
