Industrial Nightmare - part 3
'Claustrophobia'
As Skinner makes his way through a particularly dark area full of hazardous obstacles in search of a way to the rooftops, the shrieks and drumming from deep below grow louder and louder. His nerves are frayed and he tells himself repeatedly that this is all a bad dream .. it can't really be happening. But the tension mounts and it feels all too real..
He spots a door-shaped dim light ..it seems to be the entrance to a stairwell in the far corner of the massive industrial factory floor... in his haste to get there, he fails to look where he steps..
Quite suddenly there is an electronic whirring and a loud clang .. a metal hatch opens in the floor at his feet and our hero finds himself falling down through a dark narrow ventilation duct ... he slides through the vertical shaft gaining speed .. dirt flies in his eyes and mouth and terror grips his very soul. An involuntary yelp escapes him as the shaft bends first one way and then another, but he is helpless in his drop. The shaft bends at 30 degrees and slows his descent, and finally he comes to a jarring halt, his feet against some sort of filter-grate..the darkness is broken by a hatch in the duct in front of his face...
As Skinner regains his composure, he realizes the drums he had heard earlier are very close now ... he can also hear the footsteps of wailing and shrieking people .. and the evil laughter and taunts ..something not human .. cracking a whip and driving the others on. He ducks down in his restricted metal prison until the procession passes not more than 30 feet behind him. As he waits he is suddenly overwhelmed by claustrophobia .. his pulse grows rapid and his breath shallow... he comes very close to hyperventilating.
After the noise has retreated he sticks his head back out through the narrow hole and gasps for air.. he struggles enough to finally squeeze out through the hole and drop to the floor.
It seems our hero's plans to reach the rooftops have been drastically thwarted ... time for a new plan ... and quickly before someone or something less than desirable becomes aware of his presence!
