Christine's little heart rate sped to a rapid pace, and she was filled with fear. She grabbed onto his arm and questioned him again.
He could see the fear in her eyes and almost pitied her. He never thought he would have to disgrace himself by simply telling a half-truth.
A small hand reached up for his masque. Her curiosity had replaced her fear. His bandaged hand snapped up her wrist, and with his eyes a flaming glow, he pushed her away, frightening her even more. Tears soon flowed down her cheeks. She turned her face from him and cried a meek apology. Pain tore through his heart.
