I work at a photo studio doing the retouching, and I use the same basic technique that you do. However I do things a tad bit differently. I sample skin from the neck, because then no matter how much I retouch, you don't loose the texture of the skin. I also go through and remove all marks and uneven skin coloring. For that I use a large soft brush and very light pen pressure, because that will help prevent blotches.
