This deviation is not meant to be offensive to anyone, and the fact that it says "straight artists" is explained below.
Where I live, people are narrow minded. If you support the fight for gay rights, that synonymous with being gay. That's just the way things work here, as I have noticed during the promotion of my neverending quest for total equality of all people. (...No matter skin-colour, sexual orientation, religion... I guess you've heard it all before. I guess I could call myself an idealist.) I think that conscious opinions and awareness is just like a cold; contagious.
Thing is; the people I've talked with that support the fight for gay rights have really thought it all through, can provide reasons for their opinions and... Well. I have yet to meet a person that supports gay rights "...Just 'cause." Even though it makes more sense (in my opinion) to support a group of people for no obvious reason than to be against them. That might just be my forced-positive-attitude talking, but think about it?
After spending two hours in a discussion-class where I was the only one supporting the rights of homosexuals, (One tiny-teenage girl against 26 raging, narrow minded monster-kids. Imagine.) almost laughing out loud when hearing their arguments, I think it's tragic that so many people dislike/hate/even-worse gay human beings without even being able to explain why.
The purpose of this stamp is simply to say that you don't have to be black to be against discrimination of the black people, you don't have to be Jewish to disapprove of Hitler, and you do certainly not have to be gay to support gay rights.
I know bringing Hitler up is a cheap trick, please excuse my desperation. I just really care for this matter.
-- There's a book that says the world was created in 7 days; heard it was a best seller. Anyway, goes to show you, you shouldn't believe what you read in books
I COMPLETELY agree with you. I'm straight and I support gay rights. I also have a research paper on same-sex marriage that you might be interested in reading here.
Bringing up Hitler *isn't* cheap. It's a completely valid comparison to make. If the discrimination doesn't stop, it'll probably get to be just as bad as the Holocaust. The fundamentalists can be just as fanatical as Hitler was.
for you, and here's hoping people will someday open their eyes.
Thank you so much!! I've read your research-paper, and I think it's really good. You bring up a lot of points that I think that many people might not be aware of. Also, I found the quotes from the bible/UN/US Declaration and your thoughts on them very interesting.
I think there is just a matter of time before the discrimination stops, so my "mission" is just shortening that time down, and make it stop as soon as possible. People can call me stupid for thinking that one person can make a difference, but I truly believe that the masses are many little people, and that one person can do so much more that what people thought possible. The thing that worries me is that all while the adults I know (except for some Christians and religious ones) have a pretty relaxed view on sexual orientations, and don't see the point in denying gay people marriage, the younger ones do. This just seems wrong to me; reversed. My grandpa says that "they should be allowed to do as they want" and my bestfriend claimed (I did have some influence on her, luckily, so now she "tolerates them") to "hate the guts of those fucking homos".
Maybe the problem is that young people are stupid. Most of them anyway. I find that hard to believe, but if that means that they'll come around when they (or "we") grow up, then I'm willing to accept being "just" young and dumb...
Most of the adults I know are pretty relaxed about it too; in fact, my dad's sister is gay, so her parents, while they didn't really accept it at first, have grown more open about the idea. My maternal grandmother may be a somewhat different story, however. >.> It's very disturbing, really. I know someone that I'm attending college with right now who's very homophobic, simply because she's Methodist (like Dubya) and was raised to believe that homosexuality is wrong.
The weird thing is, I have another, really close friend who is also Methodist and holds the exact opposite point of view. Partly because I've influenced her in many ways and partly because she's asexual. Her brother has the same point of view as well.
Most of my former classmates would make fun of gay people sometimes, but I bet that's all they really considered their remarks--a joke. Myself and a bisexual friend of mine weren't amused.
Call it my mission as well--that's why I've been trying to spread around the UNUDHR and my paper. Perhaps I should post the paper here on deviantART. They do allow essays, I believe.
I think I can basically sum it up into one sentence: people should be allowed to do what they want with their own bodies, as long as they are not hurting anyone else who does not want to be hurt. (Keeping the BDSM community in mind there )
You're very welcome. As soon as I get 'net back on my laptop, I'll put the stamp in my journal
I am young, teenaged bisexual myself and thus am a target for alot of hate and discrimination. Mostly in the school enviroment. Seeing as the school enviroment is the large breeding ground for stupidness...v.v'
This gives a wonderful reminder that there are in fact still level headed, intelligent people out there. That not everyone is an absolute idiot who screams "OH MY GOD! GAY PERSON! SHUUUNNN!!!" without taking half a second to actually think about it. To actually ask themselves, "Hey, why do I even bother to actually care?"
I found this poem on DA some time ago:
Gay is OK
For a God who tells us not to hate
he certainly dislikes people,
who are not straight
These individuals (called homosexuals)
were givin a choice that they chose to choose
So why do you care what they do?
"Gay" does not imply murder, theft, nor rape
It only labels those who are not "straight"
Yes, homosexuals are people too
Whether you beilive it or not
They've done NOTHING to you
It just gives a person a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
It also kinda makes me wanna just go out and hug a nun. ;>.>
Thank you ever so much for standing up for homosexuals, even though you where up against 26 idiots.
If there where a helluva lot more people out there like you, the entire Gay marrige 'issue' would have been smooshed the first time they even lightly mentioned it.
Again, thank you. This really made my day.

So what if the dead walk slow? They'll catch up eventually.
The problem with people I know is that they have been raised to think that all humans are worth the same; and that you shouldn't discriminate because of skincolour, background, sexual orientation... you know. Yet, they're homophobic...
Someone did a survey in Norway, asking straight men and straight politicians about their views on homosexuality and plastic surgery: 98% of the politicians were positive about homosexuals and their rights, and negative to plastic surgery. When they asked normal men the same thing, the results were inverse: 96% were negative to gay rights and positive to plastic surgery.... I think that shows the mentality of this issue very accurately: On the surface, everyone (also normal people) is positive, etc.etc - because that's the politically correct attitude. But, in reality, it's a whole different matter.
And yes, I agree with you: Let people do as they want as long as no one is harmed. (With an exception for the BDSM community )
[sorry about the English here, but it's really early in the morning and I haven't woken up yet.... ]
I think for some people there are misunderstandings in their mind, for instance:
1) They think that sexuality is a choice/homosexuality is contagious. It's not. Like I said in my paper, it's purely sub-concious. You don't look at someone and think, "I'll be attracted to them." You look at them and notice all the little things that get your heart rate going a mile a minute and the heat rising to your face. From what some of my gay/bi friends have told me, it's exactly the same way for them.
2) They think that if they meet someone gay, that person will be attracted to them, which may or may not be the case, and even if it is, that doesn't mean they'll make a move. They have tact (for the most part), and if it's someone you know really well, they probably know you're straight anyway and won't make any advances. Just like straight people are only attracted to *some* people of the opposite sex, gay people are only attracted to *some* people of the same sex. Taste in men/women varies among *all* people, not just heterosexuals.
And yeah, in Europe, they're generally more open to the idea. A lot of the European Union have already institutionalized some form of same-sex marriage. At least European politicians aren't as short-sighted as American ones. They recognize that sexual minorities are people too, and deserve the same rights.
(Side note, I think I'm going to move to Europe. Probably Germany. Once I'm done with college.)
Now all that needs to happen is for the Catholic church to wake up about the issue. >< I USE THEIR OWN HOLY BOOK AGAINST THEM, HAH! *brandishes Bible passages at the Catholics*
...*loves the german language* I regret choosing french in school. I want to learn German. (It's not that different from Norwegian; much more grammar though.)
...Another common misunderstanding is that because a homosexual person (that is out of the closet) has made the choice to be open about their sexuality, they have to be "obsessed" with sexuality. That's not the case...
Catholic Church... Molesting little boys. Should keep their mouths shut. [sorry. Just...] I just heard about a gay minister, that had "chose" to become heterosexual. He was on Oprah or Dr. Phil or some talkshow, telling everyone about how he had no problem "resisting his urges". People like that bugs me. He had a wife and kids, and claimed that his feelings was just God testing him, and that all gay people should do like him, or they would burn in hell. (Okay, if he wanted to live that way; fine. But I wish he wouldn't try to force others to do the same...)
It's really cool that scientists have found out that almost all animals can be homosexual/bisexual, some even raising puppies or chickens or whatever in gay couples So the "It's not natural" argument... *makes toilet-sound* ...right down the drain.
No, you made my day!! This is the most heartwarming comment I've ever received, it really... I'm lost for words! [and seeing as I'm the most chatty person alive, that's an achievement!]
Thank you so much. I can only imagine how it must be to be a gay/bi teenager today... Although I do know what it's like to be "different", and I wish that society would be more open to it. I know that teenagers in general are insecure and feels some sort of need to "fit in". I never felt like that, I never felt like wearing someone else's opinion... And I really respect the individuals that dare to be individuals: teenagers that are honest towards themselves, realizing that we are in fact different persons with different personalities. I am forever grateful that I'm straight [so far, anyway What do I know, things may change?] merely because I know what kind of reception I'd get [esp. in school] if I chose to come out of the closet.
Our teacher in that discussion-class asked us a question: "What if a gay boy or girl walked into the classroom today; a new student, how would you treat him/her?"
The looks on people's faces when I said "I would treat him/her like any other person" really scared me. I won't tell you what the others said, only that it was not pleasant and that I do not envy any gay girl or boy that comes to my school.
My discussion-class is the extreme, fortunately. Luckily, things are getting better. I just want to speed things up. And by that, I don't mean by a lousy stamp [Although: it made one person's day, that's all I need. Mission accomplished] on a little website, but by doing something real: making people open their eyes.
Thank you so much for... your comment. For your compliments. For your encouragement. It really means a lot to me, and your comment really made my day!!
