Literature Text
i knew a girl once,
with an oak heart and guarded hands
(gloved from touch)
but she
uncrossed her ankles,
let naked fingertips
touch well-read lips, and
her heart kind of turned
into ash.
i miss that girl,
with the oak heart -
she was tougher.

Divorce
Before that day,
Sunday mornings had never occurred to me.
I must have slept through their every summons:
I never knew the time sensitive ritual of finding matching socks,
forcing “nice” shoes over misshapen toes,
the silent pact we would share with the warm cushions of the divan
waiting for Mother to ready us, memories that settle in the guts
like a madstone, which I could then pull out of my old cadaver

Paper-Thin Promises
the first time I caught sight of your
glistening, marble eyes,
I decided you disgust me.
I hate you the way I hate perfection:

You, the artist, always sculpting things,
tried to squeeze my malleable heart like white clay
and stash it in your pocket to rattle with stones.
paint me an unflinching self portrait, my dear:
this skyscraper of a boy shaking with anticipation
to build and destroy, build and destroy.
you sink in tooth and talon at first mention of beauty,
love-biting Aphrodite as though you were equals.

Otherwise Good Condition
I have worn the same dress
for four days, because
I am sick, exquisitely
sick --
black and gold, your drunk
dimestore Nefertiti. A
white stain announces
itself, a muddy star:
she coughed
here. Undo yourself,
those sallow words you drink,
let the silk fall loose. I've got
a face like dirty laundry
and burial grounds --
What I touch becomes
unwell. I wear my hair
like it pains me,
blow kisses
like a little girl
sucking her teeth
at cars, the caked little
tombs of sugar that crumble,
naked
under the hot milk
of the sun.
