apprenticeship is basically the right way to go for sure , i was self toaght unfortunatly ,your art skills ar there but thats only half the battle. myself i figured out i was meant to do it because i couldnt paint, i suck at it , but i could always draw with a pencil and pen. even though its nothing like it .
tattooing is a really hard techinical artform, if your one of those people who draws really fluid and your wrist and fingers is really quick and light at sketching and is too artsy fartsy, youll be totally depressed at tattooing, beause it takes a looong time to get anything accomplished. otherwise thats also a really good quality to have.
basically tape 2 large c batteries to your pencil, sit on a chair with a piece of paper taped to the wall 1 foot from your kneecaps in hight. and draw really slowly that "time" piece you have in your gallery and treat the paper like skin, wiping the paper with your other hand every 2 lines you do, every 4-5 lines set your pencil down rest a few seconds , keeping your lines no longer than 1 1/2 inches at a time the same depth at every shade. that picture should take you 1 hour to do if your doing it at the right sppeed , thats how youll find out, if you have the tollerance to draw like that 60-70 hours a week the rest of your life, you can do it.
next time your getting a tattoo, tell the guy youd like to get into the business someday , ask the artist if you could fill in a little part, try it for yourself.
its a trade like any other , electricians, mason workers, welding , you need aprenticieships to gt into those trades or else youll fuck up on the job site really bad. same thing , its a secrative business that turns you into a hardened individual a pirate among men.
