Love, rescue me
Come forth and speak to me
Raise me up
And don't let me fall.
- Love Rescue Me by U2

Obviously, this is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, one of my favorite fairy tales. I composed this in Photoshop with my tablet, incorporating a few elements that I drew and painted on watercolor paper and then scanned in. It was fun to take a break from all the pictures I've been doing lately that use heavy lineart and to just make something that's much more painterly.

Completed in May of 2006.

Prints are now available!

Also, I uploaded a small version of how this picture progressed to my Scraps area: [link] It's not a tutorial, but it will offer some insight for those who ask how I go about making a picture.

Wow... I love how you painted it in such soft, swirly, dreamy strokes.

It was really fun for me to work in this softer style after making a bunch of pictures that had relied more on line art.

Oh, I love it! The Little Mermaid is one of my favourites as well (I was always mad about how Disney messed with the ending), and this is such a lovely, soft, beautiful portrayal. Reminds me of some of the pre-Raphaelites' paintings. :D

The Little Mermaid was a great story, but for some reason, I almost preferred the story about the little matchstick girl... This is gorgeous tho...
