Edit: prints of this painting are now available through the DevArt print service.

I love entering contests. They always make me do something I would not normally do, thus pushing me to try new things and expanding my horizons.
Unfortunately, I haven't participated in a contest in a number of years now. I remembered how much I loved MGC a few weeks ago, and decided to participate in this month's contest.

The theme for the contest is "Native Cultures". The Haida are a Native American tribe that live along the Western Coast of the United States between Oregon and Alaska. We share a common idea that eagles are awesome. :)

I WON. *happy* I won both the Artistic and the Creative parts. Thank you to everybody who voted! :D

That face in the background is dead cool

Wow! This is beautiful!! I can't believe you used watercolors! I love the gargoyle's body, and how you curved it to match the shape with the face in the background. The wings are really cool-so is she a wingless gargoyle with strap on wings? I think this will definitely be a winner this month :)

i've been on a watercolor kick lately. partly because of this series of watercolor commissions i have to do and partly because it's the only color traditional medium i currently have at my disposal. :) and this is the biggest i've ever worked in watercolor also. so it's a first for me in many ways :)

i was going to give her wings... but they didnt work too well with the "mask" / "face" / "moon" in the background. so she's wingless. :)

thanks! i'm keeping my fingers crossed :) i haven't entered mgc in years, so :)

ah, I took a watercolor class a couple years ago in school-it's a lot of fun, but I have such a hard time controlling it-you've really got the medium down. I'de love to practice more, but good watercolors are so expensive and I can't afford it right now, oh well.

this is my second time entering the MGC, I should really do it more often, and so should you, because your gargoyle art is awesome! I think this piece is one of the best this month, I'm sure it will win at least one of the categories :D

i took a waterclass once too. I basically learned how to do washes (all but the most obvious tricks have of course been forgotten) and basic things like "things will bleed if paint touches water", etc. overall, not very useful. most of what i know about watercolors i've learned from painting these few paintings that i've done. boy, i can really count all my paintings on one hand! mostly it's all about putting down thin layers of paint and building up.

as for buying paints... i like cake-pan paints. this set i have was something like 50 bucks... and each little paint pan is interchangeable, so you can buy individual colors and mix and match and stuff... :) but you can actually get a paint-by-numbers set for less than that.. and it will come with some cheaper watercolors. that's what i used until last month. so the dragon painting, for example, was done with cheap paintbynumbers watercolors.

i really like your entry! very serene. smooth shading, and beautiful colors too :) how did you do that celtic border?

I had an awesome professor for my watercolor class- I think with art classes it really depends on the teacher for what you get from the class-so I have a pretty good knowledge of watercolor thanks to him, when I didn't have any before the class.

I've never used the cake pan kind-just the tubes, which is probably more expensive. I might try the cake pans. Which brand is the best?

And thanks very much! But *sigh* it came out so small in the MGC page lol-I couldn't get it any larger in photobucket. The border is kind a of a cheat, I scanned in a pre-made border from a celtic design book, then just played around with it in photoshop.

um, i like the cakes because i dont like the tubes, i think. and i dont like the tubes because you gotta use up what you got out of the tube or throw it out... after the paint dries on the palette, it doesn't dissolve back again, just sort of floats around in the water in little pieces. maybe i was doing something wrong ^_^;; when i took my one class of watercolor, the teacher was also completely into the tube paint. *shrugs* ^_^

as for brands, they only had one brand at the store when i went to buy. so mine are van gogh (they make tube van gogh too). they work pretty good, i like them :) but then again, wheni had the paintbynumbers ones, it was ok too ;)

it's still a great border, i love it :) it adds a lot to the picture :)
