Created for Creature of the Week #42 - Blind Hunter. Chiropteran Striders are distantly related to bats, though their powerful upper limbs have developed into strong legs instead of wings. This configuration allows a Strider to run and leap after its prey. The lower limbs, so underdeveloped in bats, are instead agile hand-like claws. Chiropteran Striders often stun their prey with a powerful kick and then use their smaller claws to slice open arteries or otherwise cripple a target. The creature uses sound and scent to track and target its prey, having lost its sense of sight completely.
Some days I feel like I'm picking on you, but that's what you get when you select advanced critique! I say it with love
Body looks good, smaller limbs look good, those legs though... OW! The nearer legs seems to be twisted very out of alightnment. From the way the rest of the leg is positioned, the foot should be turned more sideways towards the viewer, not showing the toes straight on.
The leg that's farther away just plain seems to be in the wrong position. The line of the leg seems to have the shoulder being somewhere in the Strider's ear. Or worse, the leg doesn't actually appear to be connected at all. The upper part of the leg is just plain mis-sloped. It slopes up towards the body. This would be correct is the creature was standing flat or had just completed a step. However, since the toes are curled up indicating its in mid step with that leg, the upper leg should either be flat, or sloping DOWN towards the body, as the other leg's position indicated it is normally has a somewhat sprawled stance. Therefore to get the foot to clear the ground, the point of the elbow would have to come quite high up during a step.
Overall concept, good. it looks like you may have originally had the back leg being the one bearing the weight, then switched later, and that's what's throwing the balance.
Nonsense! Though there may be a moment of disappointment when I get criticism it's only temporary, and I treasure your blunt and honest comments. They're much more valuable to me than "That's really cool!"
As to this piece in particular, you're right about that leg in the back. I tried about 6 or 7 different poses for it, and couldn't find one that looked right, so I just said to hell with it and stuck with one, or I'd never get the damned thing finished. I'm not proud of it. I can see that things got worse when I added the fur, though - I must have put more on the top than the bottom, which made it even further out of position. The "shoulder" also disappeared into darkness unintentionally, which makes it evern worse. Maybe I can revisit it sometime when it's not 5:00 AM and try to find a better pose. You're also right about the toes on the leg in the foreground...no idea what I was thinking there.
Thanks very much for the comment. I'll see if I can fix my critter later on.
I think putting in a firm 'ground' rather than the sort of abstact background you have now might also help clarify how the legs work. It's doing that sort of creepy floaty thing right now.
On side note, we may have some Rage stuff coming due soon. We *may* do some token cards (like Magic Sheep token cards) that are aimed at streamlining part of combat. They're basically used as place holders, so mostly just need pictures of werewolf combat, preferably with a funny quote. (the mock up I did for proposal used the headshot of Necrophagia with "Got your nose!") So basically all art, little to no text, and you more or less get to draw whatever the hell you want. Should have details on that later.
Okay, the only thing I could think of to fix this was to build a small wire model and see how the legs could actually work. Having done so, I think I've made some corrections. The leg on the far side is not positioned to better match the shoulder and to reflect a position it would actually hold while the leg in the foreground has the creature's weight on it.
I kept the curled toes because I like how that foot had come out, but it I think that based on the way I was having the critter walk it's not unreasonable for them to still be curled in that position. As to the foot in the foreground...I tried making other feet that were pointed more 'forward,' but they were all terrible. The only way my critter can walk with the limb arrangement I gave it is to tilt the whole body away from the ground at the shoulder that's currently supporting its weight, which seems like it might cause a foot to twist to one side anyway, so I think for the moment I'm going to surrender to the foot that I have for the moment.
I think at this point I need to let it sit for a few days before I can even consider working on it again.
Anyway, while certainly not perfect, is this at least better?: [link]
First off, everyone here at deviantART would like to say THANK YOU!!! We have received an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm for the launch of version 6 and believe that this has been our best-received launch to date.
You might even be one hell of a profesional, but if you don't SHOW it and PROVE it, how will everyone know? These facts are important not only when you are looking for a job, but in any situation when you wish to showcase your work. I decided to share a few guidelines that might help you give the best of yourself and help you be a better profesional.
