One of several Herbie images I have in the archives. This has sat for a decade in a sketchbook and while it is fairly raw, I have grown to like it. Pencil, rapidograph, bruch & ink.

As to the subject matter, it should be self explanatory, but for those who don't listen to anything that didn't come out past last wednesday, Herbie Hancock is one of the most influential and most dumbfounding musical entities alive today. He has recorded since the 1960s and has currently not one, but two major label contracts; one for his straightahead acoustic jazz work, and one for his electronica meets jazz meets funk releases. He is still more relevant and interesting than ANYTHING playing on your radio or TV today.

At first glance (and this is not like me at all) I couldn't make it out. I think I was looking at the negative space as postive. Then I full-viewed it and sh-bang. What a great surprise. I would not touch it, its perfect as is!

This is perfect example of a skilled young artist. You and your art , has obviously grown and matured overtime and its so vivid in comparison to your current art pieces.
The raw style is great! ;)

Herbie's the shit, but I've been worried about his recent collaborations with shitty pop artists and his effort to appeal to the younger generation, especially on Possibilities.

His collaborations with pop artists is something he flits in and out of since long before Possibilities, and he has always stated in interviews it is just another area to play with, as opposed to a sheer grab for fame he doesn't seem to really care about.

He did jazz-funk/pop mixes in the late 70s, which transitioned to dabbling in disco-jazz (including using session players like Ray Parker Jr. and Sheila E) as well as guest playing on records by pop/soul artists like Joni Mitchell, Me'Shell N'degeocello, Arcadia, Gigi, Quincy Jones, Neil Diamond, and Sly & Robbie.

He's always been that way.

Kudos on the subject matter choice.

Seeing Herbie perform last year was an absolutely profound musical experience.

And I must say I always prefer your portraiture to your symmetrical fractal work.

And as for Herbie's pop collaboration, I would also emphasize that his branching out has done nothing but good for his name and his genre. Getting non "jazz fans" hooked in with things like Chameleon or all of Man-Child or now this new record, can really open the eyes of those listening to post-Wednesday hits.

Well, the use of fractals is quite new (only the last month or so) and is still very much in development. I am hoping to make it more evolved over time into more dense and more asymmetrical forms, but my current limitations prohibit it so far.

As for Herbie, I generally am friendly to his ventures into pop, although the new album was very uneven.
