Last Words

A home that was once full of life and laughter,
Now had the black flag of Death fluttering over it.

In a city that never slept,
Where the lights always burned bright,
With promise of tomorrow,
One light was burning out,
Never to see the sun rise again.

Staring at the figure on the bed,
She beheld a shell of a person.
A person who had held her when weak,
Fed her when hungry,
Comforted her when scared.

That very person, who had brought her to life,
Was being cheated of it by her own body.

In spite of the pain,
The figure put on a brave face,
Assuring her children she would live.
For a mother would do anything,
To ensure her children do not suffer.

Yet in her heart she knew,
It was a lie.

She had but until dawn,
The bright death of mortal night.
Before she disappeared into the void,
As would the stars,
With the rising of the Sun.

One final time her mother spoke,
No more lies.

But not a sound escaped her lips, as
She breathed her last.
The light left her mother's eyes,
And with it the vestiges of her strength,
Her heart was rent with grief.

Amid the Chaos of Death,
There came a voice.

"Weep not my child, for things that have passed,
Look instead towards things to come,
With hope and courage.
Lament not my departure,
For I shall always be their, in your heart."

She arose, flecked the tears from her face,
And strode on.

Grief turned to hope,
Despair to determination,
With the blazing light of the rising Sun,
In her eyes, she prepared for the long journey ahead,
Destiny called, she answered with all her heart.

And deep inside her she carried,
The last words of one who carried her.
Words that would guide her forever,
Words that would always comfort,
The last words of a mother.

In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger.
