Two letters too long for the form, the full title of this piece is "Miss Cloud Strife: Gothic Lolita". I noticed a Halloween contest at ~Crazy-about-Cloud and thought this might make a fun entry. Doesn't Cloud look pretty with such a lovely flush in the cheeks? I was really pleased with the way the expression came out in this one. The angle was also challenging but it turned out well.
Funny story: I actually painted this picture twice. The first time, I had it all finished last night and then I pressed the wrong key and lost about five hours of painting. So I had to redo it today but it took less time because I already knew all the choices I was going to make. Still, it's a good lesson: Don't just save often. Save to new files!
Thank you. When I was working on the hair, I looked at a deviation by janaschi. I really loved the way she had rendered the hair in that one and I wanted to try the same effect so I included a strong core shadow near the highlight on each curl and emphasized the shadow on the bottom sides. It turned out very effective. I'll have to try experimenting with variations on that for other shapes.
Thank you, Mary-chan. Yeah, I feel very good about the way the curls turned out. And the composition is good too. I'm trying to pay more attention to my characters in composition rather than just drawing them any which way and them trying to compose around that.
The colours are really beautiful - gold and purple are very symbolic of Cloud! And they match really well.
Heh .. love the thick pop-art style lines. Makes it so cute! And since when did Cloud get breasts? O_O
Nice piece, it's really awesome - good luck for the contest!
Thank you. I tried to use colors that fit Cloud's style. I tried reds and it looked nice but it didn't fit the character as well as these colors do.
I've been keeping the linework in my images lately and the thicker lines help give the image depth. Thick lines come forward and make thinner lines recede so that there's a sense of depth even before it's shaded. It's a technique I'm still trying to master but I've been really pleased with the difference it has made in my recent work.
As to your last question: From the Bee Girls in Wall Market.
That skirt is fantastic! Really reminds me of a nice soft fluffy cloud. Or whipped topping.
The ringlets and shiney and soft. I'm glad this painting got to us, I usually give up if a save goes wrong. And then I loathe my computer for weeks.
Cloud Strife wearing GL, too funny~ XD
But, wow, I'm really in love with the hair! Its so beautifully shiny. The front of the petticoat though, it looks kind of odd, like a mound of cotton balls instead of um well, a petticoat, but that could just be because of his pose. Its still very beautiful either way.
