Nikolaus paused to stare wearily at his reflection in the empty shop window. The inside of his jackboots were soggy. He had a sneaking suspicion that there was a leak in his gasmask. The water in his water bottle tasted of mud. The leftovers of last night's soup in his mess tin also tasted of mud. His legs were tired. His tail was sore. His Mauser 98k rifle had seen too much action.
And to top it all off, he had no bread for his soup.

EDIT: ~Amethys kindly helped me out with the correct writing on the shop window. It should now say 'fresh local specialty bread' with no mistakes. Also touched up a bit of line definition here and there.
Nikolaus is wearing the German Wehrmacht Heer private (Schütze) uniform, circa 1944. I'm not a Nazi sympatist, I just like their uniforms. That's it.
I drew this to get myself out of a temporary fanart drawing block. Interesting how little doodles can just suddenly take flight and become something much more refined.. I think this one has become my masterpiece of the week. It's rare for me to actually like one of my own original character pics enough to want to print it out.
If you look at this picture in its entire context, there's more than just the furry little rat in it. I did not put 'cute' in as one of the keywords for this painting.
Anthropomorphic animals have long been used in an allegorical fashion to express troubled times in humanity's past and Nikolaus by *wredwrat is a beautiful example of this. (Featured by `mangapunksai)
aww,(whimper) that..(sniff) is so sad looking. but is drawn very well. hopefully when he goes hunting next time he will get enough to supply his homeless, poor, starving family.
lol. i like it a lot.
This is absolutely beautiful. The emphasis of the pic (nikolaus) definitely has a great amount of detail and looks flawless. Perfect expression, I love the way his ears are down. Great job rendering the suit and muddy boots. the text work up on the mirror is very striking and helps to put the pic in that WW2 era feel. Beautiful job with the shadows and color selection. Absolutely well done, the only thing i could see improving is a little more line work detail on the outer edges of the pic. But all and all, this is so pleasing to the eye and immediately shoves me and my critical eye into the story of this poor war torn mouse. -_- Excellent job.
I feel so sorry for him. Can you draw him again, but happier? At home mebbe with a lovely mouse wife or something? Then I won't feel bad for him any more...
Its very good, too.. ^^

But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
There's something very poinient about this And I adore his expression - it's so perfect for the picture. Excellent composition and an excellent concept make for a most excellent picture ^_^ Great work.

Odd, when I saw the picture, I immediately thought about the historical comic Maus. Cept, the Germans weren't the mice...Very touching piece, beyond the picture anyways.
