"I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king."

Elizabeth I

My entry to the Stylenoir Monarchy contest. Inspired by Isabella I of Castile, Elizabeth I and the black queen in chess. All of them powerful female figures in their own right.

Watercolour, white gouache, gold acrylic / 12x29 cm.

Digital painting for the Stylenoir Monarchy contest.

I'm really pleased with how this one turned out, let me know what you think!
I tried not to use any references, the only one used was while sketching out the skull teeth :)

Name derived from a novel I just love, Daughter of Smoke and bone. I was stuck for a name, and it kind of just fits well:) Also, the blue hair :D

Goes without saying, but this one done digitally, hence it is entering the digital portion of the contest :)

Valkyries, in Norse mythology, are often represented as maidens who choose those warriors who are to be slain on the battlefield. Not only are they often ethereal figures accompanied by ravens, but they are often depicted as daughters of royalty. In the more romanticized tales of monarchies, its the knights who give a particular brand of intrigue to the notion of nobility. Valkyries are those female knights, the basis of legends that inspired many kings and queens whilst they sat upon their thrones, or led their armies toward victory.

With over a month of planning and every detail ready to go, fate has a way of turning all of one's carefully laid plans on its head. Perseverance stood as the victor in the end, and despite all of the roadblocks that stood in the way, I'm glad that I still have an image to show for all of the trials and tribulations.

My entry to the Stylenoir Monarchy Contest.

I don't know why, but when I first read the theme, I thought "Monarchy... isn't there a butterfly called Monarch?" and then: "Ok, lets do something that would make Grimm brothers proud!" so I went with that idea :)

The spider queen in the drawing is camouflaging herself by wearing Monarch butterflies colors, but in reality she's a predator that waits to catch them (and other species that are enchanted by her looks) in her web... Dark and deceiving beauty.

For ^Pixel-Spotlight & *stylenoir Monarchy contest :la:

They're all various queens here - from ancientry, history and mythology :aww:
Fata Morgana is among them, of course, because one does not simply draw the royal ladies and not include her!

Made with black ink, white tempera & PS CS 3 - solely to experiment on how the rainbow palette can enhance the "noir" part of the concept :aww:
