They were there when David woke up on Monday morning. The sun blinked through his blinds and poked his desk with rays of light. Shining, surrounded by angelic dust motes, was a pile of jellybeans. Ordinary jellybeans in a variety of colours…there were more black and red ones that yellow ones, and David smiled because his mom had remembered that he didn’t like the yellow ones at all. He closed his eyes as it was still just those precious few minutes too early to wake up properly and get up out of bed. When his mom came in to wake him for school five minutes later, the jellybeans were gone.
“What happened to the jellybeans?” He rubbed crusty sleep from his eyes as he turned his head to his desk.
“What jellybeans?” Ruth Glass pulled the blanket off her six-year-old and poked him as he curled his gangly legs up to his chest. “Up, up, up.” Her son giggled as she poked him and once again she marvelled in the wonder that was her child.
