Uplink chapter 3As John stood above the glittering remains of the creature, his vision grew steadily darker and darker until he fell over while hearing the nearly silent sounds of a violin playing. “John? What was that? Come on, wake up!” She yelled but her words fell on now deaf ears, John’s sword still firmly gripped in his palm like an inescapable death grip.
John slowly found himself in the room in his dreams, this time instead of the wolf opposite to him it was a hooded figure who spoke in much the same voice of the wolf
“You have awakened to your inner power, the courage of a wolf has given you the sword kusanagi. This courage will help you through your journey, but you cannot do this alone. Your group shall grow, and the bonds you share will be what tempers your weapons. Good luck my child.” Finishing his speech the same sound as he heard before, the sha

It was Friday and Steve was anticipating the weekend. Being a manager, he was one of the first to arrive at the factory, not because he needed to catch up on some work, but he had another reason. Steve needed time away from his house. Although he was married, he wasn’t in a loving relationship. He felt trapped in a life that he didn’t choose and he had no one he could talk to about it. Instead, he pretended everything was fine and kept a smile on his face. As he sat at his desk drinking his coffee, he waited for the morning meeting to begin. The other manager, Louie, gave a quick pep talk and dispersed everyone to their stations. While walking the floor, Louie noticed a small group a sewers talking to each other at Madilyn’s station. He looked at Mark and asked him how many legs Madilyn had. Mark looked over at Madilyn’s station and counted the legs, “maybe she’s a caterpillar
ECHO OF SIGHT: Chapter FourThe next day, Dr. Hutchins went over the exact details of what was done to my eye. The part with the laser was added since Dr. Howard didn’t mention the stigmatism on the paperwork he wrote up for her.ECHO OF SIGHT: Chapter Four19 minutes ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
For the most part, the operation went without a hitch. My retina was folded and slid back into position. Some of the scar tissue was cut away to give it a flatter surface to rest on and the fluid in my eye was replaced successfully.
The protective shield was removed. After my eye was cleaned, I opened it and had the same result as the night before: total darkness.
“You’re going to have your work cut out for you these next couple of weeks, Roland. I need you to understand that,” Dr. Hutchins said. I felt her hand open my lids further. She must have been looking into my eye with a miniature flashlight. “Your nerve endings have to heal, so your sight is going to come back gradually.”
“How much of it?” I heard her swivel towards me. A button on

Ace put the open envelope on his nightstand. "It doesn't matter," he said. "It's from home; I'll read it l--"
"When did you write home?" asked Nanuq.
Ace sighed. Oops.
"I thought you said you wanted to get away from your father."
Ace shrugged. "I felt homesick," he said. "So while you were out looking for the ninja, I wrote a letter to my dad."
He unfolded the sheet of paper in his claws. "I would have told you," he said, "but after the whole ninja thing, it didn't seem very important."
He sat down on his bed and started reading the letter, oblivious at first to Nanuq's frown. A small sack lay open -- and empty -- next to the Zangoose. It was quite shabby-looking, but would definitely have been sturdy enough to last the expedition into the Basalt Halls -- if they had actually ended up going.
The reason they didn't, in the long run, was because Ace had decided to read the letter. It may have also been in part because of Nanuq's question.

Looking away was all Alice could do when the Dead crowded in on a young couple, several hundred feet below where she was standing. Though she knew that there was no way that she could have possibly helped those two, she couldn't help but feel guilty as she listened to their screams as they became weaker.
She was there, so she should have been able to do something.
Nothing made her feel worse than when someone died while she was around.
"You don't need to say anything," the wind blew a little, playing with her shoulder length chocolate brown hair as she spoke without looking up. She could tell by the sound of the footsteps exactly who had approached her.
Not that she necessarily needed to be trained to recognize these things. There was really only one person who would come and see her while she was on watch.

Luz walked out of the vending area, only to meet a very grumpy Michiko.
Before he could even breathe, she left a scowl on her face. Obviously, she was not in the mood, nor was she feeling like having any more failures on her hands. Up to this point, she wasn't really able to fully make the WWL work for her: just a handful. Her anger was mostly directed at his empty hand. The case was in neither hand.
"You have got to be kidding me!"
Luz cocked an eyebrow.
"My case! Where is MY CASE!?"
"...I...I don't know. I just had it--"
"And you lost it."
There was no need to finish his sentence. However, that was very much true. Michiko was certainly crushed by how her most trusted member of the team could have let that fly. This, she expected from Thod or The Factor--not Luz.
"I get it. You can't seem to understand priorities. So, here's what I'm going to d

A few days later they had finished the doors and went to the basement to put back the doll house. When they got to the bottom of the stairs Jack saw a shiny gold chain coming out of a box. "What's that?" He asks gesturing to the chain.
"That's my grandpa's solid gold locket." She grabs it and shows him the picture. "He was the most feared dragon of the Middle Ages. But this is the only one of his treasures to ever be found." She then closes the locket. Jack grabs a rock and throws it hitting the locket. "Why would you do that!?!" Yells Sapphire.
"That part's not real gold." Answers Jack. Sapphire feels the spot where the rock hit with her claw there's no dent. The spot moves inward and the other side of the locket pops open so that you can see the back of the picture and it's a map.
"This map could lead to grandpa's treasure." Says Sapphire.
"Then let's follow it." Says Jack. A ho

Humans play with each other, as I have been taught, but these two looked too old to be simply playing around. I approach carefully, wary of making the wrong impression, but then I hear the woman’s cry for help and I break into a dash. The man has forced off her jacket now, which is a stupid thing to do. It’s raining.
I pull at the man’s shoulder, and he stumbles off of the girl, raising his fists.
Wait, am I in a fight?
The man lunges forwards, but his aim is so horrendous that he misses. Perplexed, I look around in hopes of gaining some sort of clarification, but the girl is still on the wet ground, clutching at her stomach. From inside the bar, another man in a suit is scrambling to his feet and heading for the door.
I turn to look back at the other man, who appears to be what Peter calls ‘intoxicated,’ just in time to notice that he’s throwing another punch, this time with slightly better aim. The blow hits my chest, but I feel next to nothi

Thirty vamps. Thirty friggin’ bloodsuckers in one lousy nest. At least that was what emo-dude told us after we got him home. And his word was all we’d have to go on. After his disappearance they would be on high alert, so going back in to verify his account was not really an option. We got him into his bed, stressed he should drink a lot, and also made clear that it would be preferable for everyone, including him if he valued not being locked up in a mental institution, that he keep his mouth shut. Maybe also change the kind of clubs he frequented.
Then we took our leave, walking back toward our motel through the frigid night air.
“I assume you want to talk about what happened earlier?” I began, my nerves knotting up in my stomach.
Having had time to let what I had done sink in, I was actually kind of afraid. I did not want it to influence our friendship in a negative way, but I feared that might be

I would attend an English wedding and as the cream of the crop I’d be the maid of honour.
When I got the invitation and read Stacy’s oh-so-little request I almost spilled my coffee over the beautiful card.
Why the bloody hell would Stacy want ME to be her maid of honour?
I’m just a friend of her younger brother David. I met him and his family thirteen years ago on my first club holiday ever in Northern Africa.
We grew quite close within our ten days together and his family kind of adopted me from the first day at the pool as part of them.
I spent my days with Dave at the pool swimming, playing, splashing around or sunbathing lazily with his parents, Danielle and Sean, and his sister Stacy.
Our evenings were dominated by playing pool and arcade games or sitting at the quiet beach and talking about everything and nothing. His sister was three years older and was always quirking an eyebrow at us in a very teasing way.
She was absolutely sure we had

Owen rummaged through his closet looking for a helmet, swearing it should still be untouched in a box since moving in. Luckily, it was. His bike sat outside on the tiny balcony, tucked tightly against a patio set that was missing a chair. The cover collected so much dust that when Owen pulled it of it made him cough. God only knew how long it had sat out here. But today, it and his helmet both had a new purpose thanks to Andreah. Even if he wasn’t so sure of the details just yet.
Owen walked the bike out of his apartment, balancing the helmet precociously on the handlebars as he locked the door. If it wasn’t for the elevator, the temptation to just toss the bike over the edge to avoid dragging it down four flights of stairs would have been too much.
Once on the street, he clicked on the helmet. It felt dreadfully clunky and he would have risked not having one at all if Andreah hadn’t demanded he bring it. The insistence seemed out of place, as
