A Guide to Art Programs

Tue Aug 18, 2015, 4:50 PM by Goth-Kath:icongoth-kath:

Hey~! It's Goth-Kath here with another Tuesday Tip~! Last time I talked to you guys about Pricing your Art.

This time I’m going to talk about a subject that will speak to less people, but I hope it will still be useful to some.

Today's subject is : Digital Art Programs

I have seen enough people who want to start Digital and don't know which program to get. I've also seen enough artists who do not like the program they have or want a change of pace but do not know any other programs to get, or at least none that won’t cost them a kidney (I’m looking at you Adobe ):< ). So today I’m going to list a bunch of programs you can use to create Digital art, with some correct information, pros/cons, and my personal experience.

So, let’s get to it~!

Paint Tool SAI

Paint Tool SAI or Easy Paint Tool SAI is probably the most well known Digital art software out there (along with Photoshop).

Where to get it: www.systemax.jp/en/sai/

Costs: Paint tool SAI comes with a free 31 day trial. After that you will need to buy the license for 5400 Japanese Yen or $43,50 to be able to use the entire version. (After the trial ends you wont be able to save/open documents). BUT there are FREE versions of Paint Tool SAI roaming the internet. This means it will run as a trial forever. NOTE: The trial version cannot do certain things like saving transparent files.

Interface: The interface is clean and both the brushes/colour column and the layer/effects column can be switched to either side of the canvas you're working on.

The drop down menus offer various customization options, canvas rotation, filters, and deform options.

Pros: 180 layers, stabilizers, effects, filters, custom brushes, swatches/sliders/scribblepad, clipping groups, and maps.

Cons: Not much effects, not all too strong deform options, textures work a little wonky.

My experience: Good, my favorite. Easy to understand/use for beginners. Not all THAT expensive compared to other programs.

Photoshop

Second up is Adobe Photoshop~! Probably the best and most complicated one of the bunch!

Where to get

it: www.adobe.com/products/photosh…

Costs: Adobe always offers a 30 day free trial on all their products before you need a licence code to start the program. Photoshop costs $20 a month or $240 a year

(That’s Photoshop only, it offers other deals for multiple programs).

Interface: Photoshop's interface is really full when you compare it to SAI or other programs. Every tool has a drop down menu with multiple variations of the tool in them, and the drop down menus at the top offer endless possibilities when it comes to filters, deformation, and effects. The interface also allows you to either pick a light or a dark background whichever you prefer.

Pros: Seemingly endless layers, advanced colors and effects, clipping groups, custom brushes and patterns, huge amount of different tools and tricks, can animate.

Cons: Pretty expensive for students/beginners, essentially made for photomanipulations (not art), difficult to understand for beginners, wonky use of layer adjustments, heavy program so you'll need a good PC.

My experience: I actually like Photoshop. I can't say I understand it all because I don't, I think I do not even use 1/4th of what Photoshop has to offer. I really miss the stabilizer in Photoshop and as a result I cannot do much with it except painting some pre-made sketches (this is entirely my fault though, one shouldn't rely that much on stabilizer tools). Photoshop is also way too sensitive to my tablet imo and I have not found any correct setting yet. I cannot find a middle way where I can paint lightly AND get it 100% black if I choose to.

(Our Warchief, Loki-Dalton actually uses Photoshop CC 2015 daily to create their pieces, so if you have any questions about Photoshop, you can always shoot them a comment/Personal Note~)

Clip Studio Paint

Is not THAT well known but is an excellent tool to create Mangas/Comics!

Where to get it: www.clipstudio.net/en

Costs: Just like almost every program, Clip Studio Paint comes with a free trial. Afterwards you pay either $50 for Paint Pro or $220 for Paint EX. (Paint EX offers more tools/effects than Paint Pro, but Paint Pro is pretty good on its own).

Interface: Clip Paint Studio has an interface that is kind of a mash-up between Photoshop and SAI. It is pretty standard and easy to get yet Clip Studio offers so much that you can make your interface as cluttered and full as you want. Clip Paint Studio is also changeable from light to dark and back.

Pros: It offers 3D models for you to position/use for drawings, it has a huge amount of tools to help you with panels and perspective, stabilizer/flow settings, photo to Manga converter, speedlines, RGB -> CYMK settings for prints.

Cons: If you're serious about making Mangas/Comics you NEED the EX version (the expensive one), the 3D model rotation goes a bit wonky, it has a LOT of things/tricks that you need to learn, the program can

be really overwhelming, and it’s a seriously heavy program so you need a good PC to run it.

My experience: I have not used the program very often because the 3D modeling made it crash multiple times, but I can easily see the potential behind it all and it is a really good program for drawing Mangas/Comics. It needs a bit of effort to understand but the site offers various tutorials to get the hang of it.

Krita

The most complete FREE program around!

Where to get it: krita.org/

Costs: None at all, Krita is 100% FREE!

Interface: The interface is also a mash-up between SAI and Photoshop. The drop down menus offer effects/filters and the layer/color columns can be switched around to suit your style.

Pros: It's very user friendly, quick mirror view, RGB -> CYMK for prints, blending modes, great pop-up menu, good with filters/adjustments, it offers Comic/Manga templates.

Cons: Stability is lacking, layer management could be a bit better.

My experience: My experience with Krita is not much, I got it at a time where my PC wouldn't even load three tabs so it couldn't run the program well. The large brushes went really slow and buggy when I wanted to work on big high res files. Further than that I have nothing bad to say about Krita, it’s FREE and amazing at it. It lacks here and there but it’s the best choice for a beginner or professional who wants to stay at low costs.

Gimp

A Free manipulation program!

Where to get it: www.gimp.org/

Costs: None, it’s free!

Interface: User friendly and pretty clean. You can drag the bars to wherever you want.

Pros: It’s free, you have your standard options, all in all it’s decent for warping and manipulating pictures.

Cons: GIMP is a bit dead, it’s hard to operate, and you don't get more than standard brushes and horrible patterns.

My experience: I can easily say that I hate GIMP, I've used it for quite some time because I had no alternative and it was free. GIMP can be okay if you take the time to figure out how it all works but the menus are strange and the layers do not work as well.

More Programs

I can think of some more programs that I’m not familiar with. I will link them below and give you the pricetag but I cannot say any more about them because I have no personal experience.

Adobe Flash

Some people use Adobe Flash to draw in. It’s mostly used as an animation program.
Its a vector program with the ability to create smooth lines but it can't blend. So no painting!

- Where to get it: www.adobe.com/nl/products/flas…

- Costs: $20 a month or $240 a year.

Paint.net

Paint.net is a pretty decent program with good color options and it allows the use of layers.

- Where to get it: www.getpaint.net/index.html

- Costs: None, its totally free!

Corel Painter/ Painter 2016

Coral Painter is compatible with Photoshop and great for Mixed Media.

- Where to get it: www.painterartist.com/us/produ…

- Costs: $230 for everything.

Manga Studio 5
- Where to get it: my.smithmicro.com/manga-studio…
- Costs: $48

Well that's it for today~! Don't forget that not every program is meant for everyone. Maybe you'll need to switch between a few before you find one you work easily with. Choosing a good program to work with is really personal! And yes, the expensive programs offer more but they are NOT necessary to create beautiful art~! Just see how much YOU are willing to spend, and make the most of the free trials ;)
As always, if you think this article was helpful: Share~! It means the world to me (:

Happy creating!

and lied that you've been hit, I'd totally believe you.

Everytime I pass by someone with a shaded and colourful tatoo my first though is that they got hurt or something. My thoughts can be described somewhat like this:
"Oh my God, look at this dude's calf. That bruise is nasty! I can see the red weins and holy... nah, it's just Jesus"
Other time I saw a woman with a big black dot on her neck.
"Maam this mole looks like cancer to me. Why would you expose it to sunlight... Oh ok, nevermind."

I once thought that a guy was hit by a car but after a closer inspection I noticed a checkered board and birds on his back. It was actually quite cute!

I fall for this every time. Maybe that's because I bruise very easily.

*sarcastically claps* Congrats Deviantart, you've created social media hunger games..... with no actual games, just a bunch of angry people trashing higher ups.

For those who don't know, DA has "updated" premium memberships to this thing called a "core membership." Upon examining it, I discovered there are really only two major differences between this and premium member ships.

1. The Overall Appearance

Aside from the the name change, deviantart has changed the logo of the premium members. It used to be a simple star at the end of your username. This star was deviantarts' traditional green color, and the star was average size. I thought this star was simple and pretty nice. It made my username look very pretty.
When I got on the site today, however, I was faced with a bright orange star. What the heck? It completely contrasts with deviantart green and honestly, I think it's pretty ugly. I used to like showing my username with it's premium star. Now, it makes my username (along with many others) look a lot less attractive.
The old logo was perfectly fine. Give the membership a name change. I'm cool with that. Make everyone with the membership's username look ugly. That's stupid.

2. The Price

Look deviantart. I'm not popular with commissions. The few points I have were from gifts and daHub, which I've only used twice.
The only reason I got this membership was because instead of using my grade card money on a laptop which could make my art a lot easier, I used it on this. I didn't get a laptop, for this membership. I delayed a lot of beneifits, for this crap.
There are some people like me, who don't get a lot of commissions and can't afford the membership. Do you know what DA does with some of your commission money? They take some for themselves. All they care about is the money. I don't know what to say, but this is pretty dumb

A few more words

PLEASE DON'T HARASS DA ADMINS OR DEACTIVATE YOUR ACCOUNT!!!!!

Telling the staff they are idiots and giving them a bunch of hate is unnecessary and cruel. That's bullying. Instead, sign this petition here: www.change.org/p/deviantart-co…

Also, deactivating your account over a logo is just plain idiotic. You lose all your art, watchers, comments, etc. Do you think the staff even cares?

My opinion on "core" membership:
We would all be better just switching back to premium

Others journals about the issue:

#boycottcorememberships
Core (Update)(Some funny Core art at bottom) Okay XD Well I bet everyone will read this wrong so I'll update it with this right here so please don't get anything too out of portion... Okay so this is more for the outrageous money increases and the art thief stuff... who cares about the ugly glitchy as fuck logos... we'll get used to them like always XD Also I'm pretty pissed about the "no notice" part... they didn't even have the decency to tell us first or when thy updated... Also this COULD be a hack or even an update mistake (something in development that got posted on accident considering no notice). But I really don't understand why everyone in this world has to be money hungry? Why can't we just not have it and just trade things for the stuff we need...
DA ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS ABOUT THIS!!! No notice, no nothing, just BAM! You give us the most HUMILIATING UPDATE IN THE HISTORY OF DA!!! (as of the time I've know it for... other than the "Socializing DA" Stuff)
Okay so over night they decide

<da:thumb id="550983862"/>
if you're serious about boycotting, read this.another edit, about the money stuff.
here's spyed talking about issues with revenue and money stuff, and hinting at core.
and more discussion about lack of communication.
there was some discussion in the comments about how DA could possibly be broke, with getting $10million in 2013 to keep it the top art website. but after a discussion with a website dev, it's entirely possible for a website to cost millions of collars to host. Similar websites like tumblr and imgur have received 4x and even 100x money in funding.
(but there's also this if you want to read it too.
any other insight on this topic would be helpfu

I know everyone else has had their issues with certain changes taking place here over the past couple years, and for the most part I have been either supportive or, at the very least, moderately accepting of DeviantArt's changes. Having been a member through various accounts for over a decade, I have seen this site come a long way since its days of inception and early popularity, and oftentimes I was excited to watch the site grow and evolve into a popular powerhouse and my central internet stomping grounds.

Now it is my turn to climb up on that soapbox with everyone else and give a raging "LEARN TO CUT THIS SHIT OUT DA."

The first big change that churned my stomach contents was definitely the change in art theft policy (colloquially considered as "DA's Pro-Art-Theft Change-About). Despite all the jargon DA admins laid out in near-poetic condescension, the message was pretty clear: DA was not going to take steps to protect your art. I know previously moderators and administrators were likely flooded with reports of "Permission Issues" and "Observed Art Theft" from both the offended artist and from the artist's watchers and supporters, and I cam sympathize with that to an extent. It cannot be any small or easy task to try and protect the content of millions and millions of users, particularly when some users would argue back and forth over the legitimacy of certain 'look-alike' art pieces. But that is the responsibility of a site that looks to attract those millions and millions of users and encourages them to not only share, but sell their works.

A particular example that stands out in my head was when the beautiful piece Adventure Time! was taken by another user who blatantly (and poorly) erased the original artists' watermark, replaced it with his or her own, and then tried to sell the piece and make a profit. It took months and months before administrators finally took any steps against the art theft, and the original artist had taken to watchers and fellow supporters to also report the occurrence and make other users who were supporting the stolen work aware of what had actually happened. There were other instances over the years I observed in which fellow users would watch out for their favorite artists and take steps to alert the artist and DA's admins over art theft concerns. This system of support may have been slow-going, but it allowed both artists and watchers to try and take action or have some feeling of control when another user took advantage of someone else's hard work and effort. I had hoped DA would refine their system in order to better protect the works of their devoted members...but instead DA took the exact opposite route. They took the route of a hands-off approach, which in the real world would have equated to "If you observe a crime, instead of reporting it to the police, we want you to walk up to the criminal and hand them the rule book while we sit by and do nothing about it because we're too busy and don't trust you guys to understand what you're really talking about."

Now the issue of the "core membership" has occurred, and now I am joining with the throes of other users who really are not sitting too keenly with that change there. Luckily I repurchased a year's Premium Membership only a month earlier back when the prices were the same as they had been, so I narrowly dodged DA's newest shitty shift. The Core membership is simply a Premium membership with a semantic alteration and a heavier price, yet has no added perks or new gimmicks to make charging more even an arguably reasonable move on their part. This change riding in on the aftermath of DA announcing they will not take active steps to protect a user's art seems like a cheeky slap in the face. Where else would the selling pitch of "Come live under our bridge in the projects where we won't offer you much protection from the natural inclement weather of the internet or the sticky-fingered habits of the kleptomaniac, but your rent will be even more expensive than before!" really work out?

It is not working for me, and from what I already have been hearing today, it is not working for a lot of other users either.

I hope DA does some reflecting and a quick about-face with these decisions or I, too, will be following some of my favorite artists out the door. Weasyl is beginning to feel more and more enticing.
That one random notification that never existed, is gone. Finally my DA is back to normal!
Ok I have not been on lately and so have the founder and co founders. So if you submitted art to the group that Expired please resend the request. If you want to join the group PLEASE tell me so I can let you in as a member because I don't know why but we don't have a member option wen you ask to join and so please let me know if you want to be a member.
