Thu Sep 6, 2012, 4:34 PM

The air is crisp and the leaves are changing, which can only mean one thing - school is back in session! DeviantART is celebrating the new school year with an improvement-themed contest, inspiring interviews, and an opportunity to help those in need.

To celebrate artistic growth, we're turning one of deviantART's most popular memes, Draw This Again, created by the amazing *Bampire, into a site wide contest. We're challenging you to take a piece from your past and draw it again to show how you've grown. Use the template below to submit your past and new work as a single entry to the Draw This Again Contest.

50 Semi-Finalists and 10 Finalists will receive bundles of prizes. Details below.

Select one of your pre-existing deviations from your current Gallery (traditional, digital, or photography).

Recreate this work using your newfound abilities in the medium of your choice.

Place the original work into the left side of the template and your new work into the right side of the template.

Once you're done, submit your finished work to our contest category, remembering to link to your old work in the deviation description.

Ten Finalists will receive:

  • Their new work as a Framed Fine Art Print
  • One-year Premium Membership to deviantART
  • dA PRO Nomad Bag
  • DeviantART Hoodie of their choice*

Fifty Semi-Finalists will receive:

  • 100 deviantART Points
  • 3-month Premium Membership

  • Make a new and improved version of the past work. Place the past work (on the left side) and the new work (on the right side) in the template provided;
  • Submit your completed template as either a .JPG or .PNG file to the contest gallery, providing a link to the "Past Work" deviation in the artist description;

We're highlighting the careers of four professional artists and their journeys through art school. We asked them questions on how their paths formed, challenges along the way, and how education in the arts helped them to be where they are today.

Charity Bundle Young Arts
Young Arts

To show our support for education through the arts, for 2 weeks we will be donating 10% of all sales of the brand-new Back-to-School Bundle to Young Arts, a charity that assists young emerging artists in their educational and professional development.

Three Steps to Success

1. Download the template & create your own bottle artwork.

The template will provide you with a rectangular         "skin" outline representing the dimensions         of the actual label that wraps around the bottle.         Place your artwork into the rectangular template.         There is also a side-view of the bottle, which you         may optionally use (in addition to the required         rectangular skin) to show off your artwork on an         actual bottle shape.

Create anything you want using the template so         long as it represents your vision. Your entry         should show the Art Water name in whatever design         or placement you choose.

Helpful tip: The Art Water bottle is clear, meaning         you can play with the transparency for some crazy         layering effects. Now download the template and         start creating!

Download Bottle Template

Upload your Artwork to one of three categories: photography, traditional art and digital art.

Save your artwork as a GIF, JPG or PNG and upload it to deviantART via the buttons below.

Upload Photography Entry Upload Traditional Art Entry Upload Digital Art Entry *The photography category is for any entry in which photography is the dominant medium used and any entry using photomanipulation techniques based on photographs.

Win Awesome Prizes!

Contest Winners

The response to the Wacom's Bring Your Vision to Life contest was truly awe-inspiring! With over 9,500 submissions, it was deviantART's most successful contest to date! We want to give a big thank you to everyone who entered, as well as to our great judges from Wacom (who had a very difficult job to do.)

Once again, we have been extremely impressed by the creativity and talent of the deviantART community. We are proud to announce the following winners (including Community Choice, chosen by YOU!) Let's check out who's getting their hands on a brand new Intuos4!

Second & Third Place Finalists

In the initial posting of this article, the 2nd and 3rd place winners had been mistakenly switched. The order on the page now is the correct one. We apologize for the confusion.

The Movie

New from producer Tim Burton and director Shane Acker comes the post-apocalyptic fantasy "9". In the too-near future, the world's machines have turned on mankind, decimating the human population before being largely shut down.

In a mission to salvage the legacy of civilization, a group of small creations were given the spark of life by a scientist in the final days of humanity. Surviving past the apocalypse, one of their own, #9 (voiced by Elijah Wood), emerges and displays leadership qualities that may help them survive and possibly even thrive.

With their group so few, these "stitchpunk" creations must summon individual strengths in order to outwit and fight against the still-functioning machines.

"9" is in theatres 9/9/09.

The Contest

Give your own creation the spark of life! The fictional universe of "9" is filled with creatures of all shapes and sizes, constructed primarily of found objects from the wasteland that Earth has turned into. DeviantART and Focus Features are challenging you to do what you do best and get creative! Invent a machine-like creature of your own using common, household found objects, and submit drawings, paintings, sculptures, and even photographs of your creature.

Check out the trailer above and images from the movie for inspiration!

"Paper Heart" is in select theaters August 7th.

Does love really exist?

Charlyne Yi does not believe in love. Or so she says.

"Paper Heart" follows Charlyne as she embarks on a quest across America to make a documentary about the one subject she doesn't fully understand. As she and her good friend (and director) Nicholas search for answers and advice about love, Charlyne talks with friends and strangers, scientists, bikers, romance novelists, and children. They each offer diverse views on modern romance, as well as various answers to the age-old question: does true love really exist?

Then, shortly after filming begins, Charlyne meets a boy after her own heart: Michael Cera. As their relationship develops on camera, her pursuit to discover the nature of love takes on a fresh new urgency. Charlyne risks losing the person she finds closest to her heart.

Robert shot an action-packed short film called Two Scoops, starring twins Lola and Lucia who operate an ice cream truck by day and happen to also be monster-slayers. The Cause

DeviantART has partnered with FAIR (Freedom, Action, Inclusion, Rights) to help promote equality through The Love Unites Shepard Fairey Equality Project. We're asking our members to align themselves with this cause through their passion and creativity, and have their work judged by renowned artist, Shepard Fairey, in the process.

FAIR, with its finger on the pulse of our generation's passion and potential, is revolutionizing what it means to be young and active. Stepping up after the passage of Proposition 8 (the California state proposition banning same-sex marriage) to galvanize tomorrow's leaders, FAIR emerged as a grassroots force. The group brings together the skills, passion, and determination of a collection of young professionals from diverse backgrounds committed to the struggle for equality. FAIR has given the movement a visible face, image, and message. On November 15th, 2008, FAIR's first event brought, in less than a week, 15,000 people to City Hall, and asked Shepard Fairey to create the "Love Unites" image now a unifying symbol at equality events across the globe. Working to create a tangible shift in California's marriage equality movement, FAIR embodies and empowers a new generation to claim equality and freedom as their own; and, with pop culture street cred backing it up, wages war on homophobia.

The Contest

To spotlight the equality cause, FAIR has teamed up with over 80 celebrities (everyone from Robert De Niro to Julia Roberts, Scarlett Johansson to Jared Leto) and had them sign and, in some cases, customize the original Shepard Fairey "Love Unites" print, which you can find available for download below. The customized pieces are being auctioned off online here.

Deviants it's YOUR turn to customize the "Love Unites" print and have Shepard Fairey judge your creation! For this contest, we're asking you to remix and re-imagine the original "Love Unites" print. The contest is open to ALL deviantART members, EVERYWHERE in the world. Not only is this a great opportunity to help promote a fantastic cause, but the final winners will be chosen by Shepard Fairey himself! This is a huge deal; so have fun and get creative with the "Love Unites" design, get your work checked out by Shepard Fairey, and win some awesome prizes.
