(**ADDED SIMPLE AND ADVANCED Q&A** THANK YOU, JAPAN. THANK YOU. :iconlolyesjapan: )

( GUYS, I KNOW IT'S TL'DR. BUT IS IT HARD TO USE CLTR + F? D: )

SIMPLE

Q: What is Shimeji?

A: Shimeji is a program for windows 2000 and vista, that is basically like your average desktop sitter, or that old purple monkey from the older version's if windows, minus the whole "Rogue adware" thing. They come in all sorts of skin's, its most commonly japanese skins, but recently boards like 4chan have found it, and began crafting skins for it. It's same as BONZIBuddy or sheep.exe, except it's customisable; yes, you can download packs that allow for your favourite characters to walk/climb/be generally cute on your screen.

Q: Why is it called Shimeji?

A: It references to a japanese mushroom, saying like they duplicate like japanese mushrooms.

Q:What do they do?

A: Once you run the program, a icon will appear on your toolbar, diffrent icon's for diffrent skins, usually. As they fall from the top of your screen, they will usually stand up and walk around a bit. For a minute or two they may stand still for a second to call apon coding, then they will wander around your desktop, sometimes sitting down to relax, or climbing along your monitor sides.

Q: Anything amazing?

A: Well, the thing is programmed to be able to climb on windows, and on occasion. Pull them to the point where they can throw it offscreen. (There is a function to make it return to desktop though.) They can also duplicate themselves freely, but you can just use another function to remove all but one. And no, as far as I know there isnt a way to stop them from duplicating, unless you edit the code.

Q: You said something about skins?

A: Sure did! There are alot of skins that have been released in the past. Some off of comic book heroes, some off of japanese vocaloid stuff. Some off of just meme stuff, like coolface, babby, 4chan stuff.

ADVANCED
Q: Does it Work on Mac?

A: Sorry but, no. It does not work on Mac at the moment. It only support Window. The buddy is only scripted for Windows not MAC.

(Also MAC does not have the latest update on Java ) - Anon

EDIT: SHIMEJIS CAN NOW BE USED/INSTALLED ON MACS. LOOK AT THIS BLOG FOR MORE INFO. :iconyayrussiaplz:

Q: Will they ever make one for Mac?

A: I hope they do, but Mac is not supported with this script and so I can’t do anything about it.

Q: Will it work on Window (XP,7,Vista, etc.)

A: Yes, the desktop buddy is only scripted for ALL Windows.

Q: My buddy threw my Window away and I can’t retrieve them! Help?!

A: To retrieve your window back. Go to your task bar and Right Click the icon. Once you have down that, click the 4th option. You’re window will be back to normal.

Q: My buddy just sits around & doesn’t do anything.. Is it normal?

A: Yes it is normal. It’s randomly scripted that way.. You CAN throw them around the desktop. They randomly do whatever they want. Please don’t complain about it Or say something is wrong.. Like I said.. It’s randomly scripted.

Q: How come my buddy doesn’t throw any windows?

A: Like I said, It’s randomly scripted... You must have your window into a little window and do not make them full screen. The buddy do whatever they want.. PLEASE DON’T COMPLAIN THAT IT DOESN’T WORK. Because it does. It takes a long time to do that.

Q: Can I have 2 or more buddies at the same time?

A: Yes you can. Any buddy of your choice can be at the same time.

Q: It doesn’t work, help?

A: If it doesn’t work, you might click the wrong app? Because there is 2 different types.  It either has  Shimeji  or  ClickMe.   If it does have a ‘ClickMe’ please do so to click that. If not, click Shimeji.exe.

Also if you didn’t extract it, then it won’t work properly. Please extract the file on to you’re destination folder. If you already extracted it, please reconsider to reinstall it.

Other solution; You don’t have the latest Java.. Make sure you download the latest Java go here:

www.mediafire.com/?8bc5ujb1t2t…

Q: “So I extracted the folder to the desktop. Clicked on Shimeji there’s a Japanese error? Then I click on ClickMe there are two folders that appear com and META-INF. What should I do? “

A: Well basically , all you have to do is uninstall Winrar.. try using other version of Winrar.. I heard the free trial winrar is messing around with the ClickMe file.

If the ClickMe file does have a 3 folder books icon.. Then you just need to uninstall it. :] not that hard.

Q: How do you reinstall (remove file)?

A: Make sure you exit out the app. To exit, go to your task bar and find the icon(random icons). Right click the icon and click the 5th option (last option). Once you finished, you can delete the files (folder) and try reinstall it again in the tutorial.

Q: How do you remove/close the buddy completely?

A: To exit, go to your taskbar and find the icon(random icons). Right click the icon and click the 5th option (last option). (its on the tutorial for screen shots)

Q: How do you delete multi characters/clones?

A: If the characters multiply rapidly, it’s best to Right Click on the task bar and Click the 3rd option.

Q: I can’t open .RAR file?!

You need to install Winrar  or www.7-zip.org/ in order to open a .rar file.

Q: Does it lag your computer?

A: It depends. We had 1 report that said it lags. It doesn’t usually lag.. Many had multiple on screen and doesn’t lag.  It depends how many memory space you have in your computer. That might of cause it.

Q: Where to download WinRar?

A: To download WinRar go here ( download.cnet.com/WinRAR-64-bi… ). I prefer downloading 32 bit just in case your computer is not compatible to 64bit.

IF YOU DON’T WANT TO USE WINRAR, please download this one. www.7-zip.org/

(Others)

Q: 'I want it too...but it doesn't work on my computer...when I double click the "shimeji.exe" theres a dialog box saying its potentially unsafe file type of .exe.'

A: If you are trying to open the shimeji.exe file and you recieve an error message in Japanese, this should override that error. kpopdesktopbuddies.co.cc/post/…

Q: "I have a quick question about making my own Shimeji.
When making these, my friend and I have been having a problem with transparency. When we make the images to replace the template and then transparent it, when it's mirrored to be facing the right (unlike the image in the img folder, which faces left), the transparency stops working and the image loses its color
If we leave the background color white or another color, it stays solid and then both the image and the mirrored work fine, except for the backgrounds of both not being transparent
Do you know how to fix this?"

A: If your program has a magic wand tool, go to whatever layer has the hair colour and use it with 0 tolerance outside the hair. invert selection and exterminate any pixels outside the outline. It seems shimeji doesn't have support for opacity/transparency so if there's even just 1% left of a pixel it'll show up in full force, so use pencil mode on your eraser.

A tip when colouring is also to use the magic wand tool inside the area to be coloured on the layer of the outline (and then change layer) and then use the extend option with 2 or 3 pixels, this should let you avoid ever getting pixel problems.

Q: .ZIP doesn't work, dumbass. How'dya make 'em work? My computer/laptop hates .RAR.

A: WELL, EXCUSE ME, PRINCESS. >.> Ahem. There are two methods.

Okay, if you downloaded the ZIP file and it doesn't work it's most likely because ZIP doesn't conserve the japanese file names for the XML files it needs to work with. So to get it to work you need to rename two files inside the CONF folder.
The one that's 43kb in size should be 動作 and the 10kb one should be 行動.

or.

Get a working Shimeji. Copy all the files except "IMG". Meanwhile, on the non-working shimeji (.ZIP), Delete all files except "IMG" and paste the copied files. If it still doesn't work after you've done that, then I don't know what's wrong. D; Sorry.

ps. sorry for this quite rush entry..
:new: :iconrelic-nt: Updated Shimeji-EE.

Information received in: November 12 2010. 3 hours and 45 mins. ( 9am )

FYI, I updated Shimeji-ee to version 1.0.4.  The only change is that this version uses about half the memory of the old version... this either means that your machine will run Shimeji-ee better or you can run double the number of Shimeji image sets.  *grin*  This should be the last update I make (really this time) unless people find bugs.

Information received in: November 11, 2010 12:35am

Hi, I'm just letting you know I updated Shimeji-ee. I added a pop-up window when Shimeji-ee starts that lets you choose which of the image sets (the Shimeji type folders under the img folder) you want to use. Careful, like in Shimeji, every different type you pick uses a lot of memory right now. This'll probably be the last update unless someone finds bugs (or someone else adds features / improves memory usage.)

I also converted a huge set of Shimeji I had on my hard drive (I don't remember where I originally got them though) to Shimeji-ee image sets. To use them, just copy the folders named after characters to the Shimeji-ee img directory. Here's the link: depositfiles.com/en/files/78lw…

And thanks for making your post! But looking at it again, it kinda seems like a huge wall of text nobody would ever read. If you can, can you replace it with this shorter version? If not, oh well. Thanks.

:::::

Shimeji is japanese desktop mascot program that makes a bunch of characters wander your screen and play around. I took the Shimeji source code and made a Shimeji English Enhanced (Shimeji-ee) version. I translated everything to English (including the configuration files), added a right click menu to force the Shimeji do the actions you want, and added support for using multiple types of Shimeji characters at once. It's all working.

You can download it from here: code.google.com/p/shimeji-ee/d…
But make sure to read the readme first: code.google.com/p/shimeji-ee/w…

If someone would like to write some guides, program in more features (or take much needed look at memory usage), or add new image sets, you can join the project and contribute at the Shimeji-ee home page.

Here's the project's homepage: code.google.com/p/shimeji-ee/

I also converted a set of Shimeji I had on my hard drive (I don't remember where I originally got them though) to Shimeji-ee image sets. To use them, just copy the character named folders to the Shimeji-ee img directory. It's really easy to convert Shimeji to Shimeji-ee image sets yourself, you just need to rename and copy the old Shimeji img folders to the Shimeji-ee img folder. See the program readme for more information.

Here's the large file of 80 or so Shimeji-ee image sets: depositfiles.com/en/files/78lw…

Characters like Adachi and Aizen have special configuration files, so you may want to take a look at their folders.

===================================

OTL I'M SO LAZY AND SLOW.

From: :iconrelic-nt:
Date Sent: 2 Days ago.

===================================

code.google.com/p/shimeji-ee/

Remember Shimeji, that desktop mascot program?  Yeah, I know it's so two months ago.  Anyway, I started a branch of the code called Shimeji-ee (Shimeji English Enhanced.)  It's Shimeji, but completely in English/Engrish (including the configuration files) with some new enhancements.

I'm mainly here asking people to contribute to the project: programmers, wiki writers, and people to make new Shimeji types.

So far, I have the English translation mostly done (although it could use editing) and I've added support for: multiple Shimeji types at once, better context menus, and the ability to force a Shimeji to perform behaviors.  I've pretty much done everything I want with the program and I'm not really intending to do more programming.  But I opened up the project at google code so other people can contribute.  I'll answer questions people have, okay contributors, and check code changes.

As far as programming goes, the major improvements I can think of are: Better memory usage (Shimeji was a hog and may have a leak), GUI for managing image sets at run time, allowing Shimejis to interact with non-browser windows, Pop Up Error messages, and Now Loading messages.  Of course, more error messages and commenting would be nice, but no one wants to do that.  I'm sure there are a lot of bugs too, I haven't tested it all that much.  And if you programmers don't like the code, don't blame me, most of it was taken from the original Shimeji project.

As far as wiki writing goes, guides to configuring Shimeji-ee would be nice.  Shimeji is actually very customizable, but it's not obvious how to do it.

Come and visit the homepage.  Don't expect much though, I put this together relatively quickly.  If you want to be added as a contributor, please send an e-mail to "relic.nt+Shimeji@gmail.com".

Spread this post around if you can.

If you want to use the current version of Shimeji-ee, here's some info:

Shimeji English Enhanced

Shimeji-ee is a Windows desktop mascot that freely wanders and plays around the screen.  Shimeji was originally created by Yuki Yamada of Group Finity (www.group-finity.com/Shimeji/)… branch of the original Shimeji project not only translates the program/source to English, but adds additional enhancements to Shimeji.

==== Homepage (with wiki) ====

Homepage: code.google.com/p/shimeji-ee/
Download: code.google.com/p/shimeji-ee/d…

There are two downloads versions, Calm and Mischievous. The only difference is their configuration files. The Mischievous version will divide itself and toss around non-full screen browser windows. The recommended version is mischevious: shimeji-ee.googlecode.com/file…

==== Requirements ====

Same as the original Shimeji:

1. Windows XP or higher
2. Java 6 or higher, MUST be 32-bit Java

==== How to Start ====

Extract the zip and Double Click the Shimeji-ee icon (Shimeji-ee.exe).  Right click the tray icon or the individual Shimeji for options.  Left click the tray icon to create another Shimeji.

==== Basic Configuration ====

If you want multiple Shimeji types, you must have multiple image sets.  Basically, you put different folders with the correct Shimeji images under the img directory.

You can pretty much take the image folders from existing Shimeji sets, rename them, and put them under Shimeji-ee's img folder.

Here's an example.  If you want to add, say, a new Batman Shimeji:

1. Create an img/Batman folder.
2. You must have an image set that mimicks the contents of img/Shimeji.  Create and put new versions of shime1.png - shime46.png (with Batman images of course) in the img/Batman folder.  The filenames must be the same as the img/Shimeji files.  Refer to img/Shimeji for the proper character positions.
3. Start Shimeji-ee.  Now Shimeji and Batman will drop.  Right click Batman to perform Batman specific options.  Adding "Another One!" from the tray icon will randomly create add either Shimeji or Batman.

When Shimeji-ee starts, one Shimeji for every image set in the img folder will be created.  If you have too many image sets, a lot of your computer's memory will be used... so be careful.  Shimeji-ee can eat up to 60% of your system's free memory.  If it tries to use any more, it will crash.

Shimeji-ee will ignore all the image sets that are in the img/unused folder, so you can hide image sets in there.  If enough people want it, a future release may add some better capabilities (namely a image set selection tool when Shimeji-ee is run) to managing Shimeji image sets.

Also, read through the configuration files in conf/.  Most options are somewhat complicated, but it's not too hard to limit the total number of Shimeji or to turn off certain behaviors (hint: set frequency to 0.)

==== Advanced Configuration ====

All configuration files are located in the in the conf folders.  In general, none of these should need to be touched.

The logging.properties file defines how logging errors is done.
The actions.xml file specifies the different actions Shimeji can do.  When listing images, only include the file name.
The behaviors.xml file specifies when Shimeji performs each action.

Each type of Shimeji is configured through:

1. An image set.  This is located in img/[NAME].  The image set must contain all image files specified in the actions file.
2. An actions file.  Unless conf/[NAME]/actions.xml exists, conf/actions.xml will be used.
3. A behaviors file.  Unless conf/[NAME]/behaviors.xml exists, conf/behaviors.xml will be used.

==== How to Quit ====

Right-click the tray icon of Shimeji (or an individual Shimeji), Select "Bye Everyone!"

==== How to Uninstall ====

Delete the unzipped folder.

==== Trouble Shooting ====

Shimeji-ee takes a LOT of time to start if you have a lot of image sets, so give it some time.  Try moving all but one image set to the img/unused folder.

If Shimeji is running out of memory, try editing Shimeji-ee.bat and change "-Xmx1000m" to a higher number.

If the Shimeji-ee icon appears, but no Shimeji appear:

1. Make sure you only have image set folders in your img directory.
2. Make sure you have 32-bit Java on your system.  If you have both 32-bit Java and 64-bit Java installed, try double clicking Shimeji-ee.bat or Shimeji-ee.jar.  Shimeji-ee requires 32-bit Windows DLLs so can not work with 64-bit Java.
3. If you're somewhat computer savvy, you can try running Shimeji-ee from the command line.  Navigate to the Shimeji-ee directory and run this command: "C:Program Files (x86)Javajre6binjava" -classpath Shimeji-ee.jar -Xmx512m com.group_finity.mascot.Main -Djava.util.logging.config.file=./conf/logging.properties
4. Try checking the logs (ShimejiLogX.log) for errors.  If you find a bug (which is very likely), post it up on the Shimeji-ee homepage under the issues section.

======================================

Additional from Me/relic-nt,

The Shimeji-ee has different types, right?
The Calm one and The Mischievous one.

The calm Shimeji-EE is...The personal Shimeji Edition. They can't throw windows etc. They are obedient and not...hard to cope.

While the Mischievous ones are the Ultimate Edition. They throw non-fullscreen IE away. I think Mischievous also multiply fast. XD

**I think it was mentioned.**

But, I just pointed out the difference. In case you uhh...don't read it throughly.

There are more info on this blog so...check it out.

*was so busy, I delayed posting this. Sorry, guys.*
=====
I hope this is okay to put here. I thought it would be relevant to our group ^_^

Most of these I gathered on my own. Another great list is here: nepeta.mozai.com/shimeji/ All the shimeji on that list are also listed here.

The first list set will all take you to the original source of the shimeji, NOT the direct download. Some of the download links are in the descriptions. The second list set is of direct downloads for shimeji with uncredited sources. If you know who they belong to, please let me know. ALWAYS credit your source when posting images of the shimeji!

If you know of a shimeji not on this list please let me know! I'm always trying to keep it updated and hunt for original sources. I know there's a lot more out there that I own or have seen but can't find the original links for so any help you have would be greatly appreciated!

Shimeji I'm on the hunt for again:

There's a way DeadEndKing found out to help with the windows 7 shimeji problem-

"Hello there! It's DeadEndKing (That one guy who'll swamp you with shimejis for a few weeks and then mysteriously drops off the face of deviantart until a week or two later when he swamps your group yet again), I just wanted you to know that I have found a way to get around the Java problems that 64 bit users encounter with the Shimeji program. All you need to do is downgrade your Java using a link found here:
www.mediafire.com/?e6e2i53jgna…

Other comments on this problem:

:iconcynicalcucco: "There is now a way to run Shimeji without the use of parallel desktop/wine.
cynicalcucco.deviantart.com/ar… "

Also, Please remember-
I've been getting a lot of comments on the group's page asking for Shimejis to be made, and a few notes.
I'm just trying to say that if you want a Shimeji made, don't post a comment on the group or send a note, Probably only Me and the Contributors are going to see it in our inbox. If you want a Shimeji made you can ask a Shimeji maker, but please avoid making comments or notes asking.

I've also been seeing comments related to people telling what Shimeji(s) they want, please stop writing them too, it's kinda spamming the inbox and front page, it's also not really needed.

We are a shimeji group, but we do not take requests to create them! Sorry to anyone who wants a shimeji, but please don't request from us.

Hello,
this is a submition by :iconrelic-nt: which I find is to be considered and useful.
Especially for people who get tired of explaining to newcomers and customers what the manual of the shimeji says.:

code.google.com/p/shimeji-ee/

Remember Shimeji, that desktop mascot progam?

Shimeji was originally created by Yuki Yamada of Group Finity (www.group-finity.com/Shimeji/). This branch of the original Shimeji project not only translates the program/source to English, but adds additional enhancements to Shimeji.

==== Homepage (with wiki) ====

Homepage: code.google.com/p/shimeji-ee/
Download: code.google.com/p/shimeji-ee/d…

There are two downloads versions, Calm and Mischievous. The only difference is their configuration files. The Mischievous version will divide itself and toss around non-full screen browser windows. The recommended version is mischevious: shimeji-ee.googlecode.com/file…

==== Requirements ====

Same as the original Shimeji:

1. Windows XP or higher
2. Java 6 or higher, MUST be 32-bit Java

==== How to Start ====

Extract the zip and Double Click the Shimeji-ee icon (Shimeji-ee.exe). Right click the tray icon or the individual Shimeji for options. Left click the tray icon to create another Shimeji.

==== Basic Configuration ====

==== Advanced Configuration ====

==== How to Quit ====

Right-click the tray icon of Shimeji (or an individual Shimeji), Select "Bye Everyone!"

==== How to Uninstall ====

Delete the unzipped folder.

==== Trouble Shooting ====

These are the ones that I know of, and that follow the same size size/follow the same anatomy and stuff. If there are others please tell me. I'm not putting up anything about any Shimejis being worked on, just if they are complete.

IF IT DOESN'T WORK:
You might have to rename files.
Under the Shimeji folder there is a conf folder. Open it and change the 11 KB file's name to 行動 it is isn't already. There should be a 43 KB one. Change that to 動作.

Basically:
Go to the conf folder in the Shimeji folder.
Rename file names accordingly:
43 KB (or around) file should be renamed 動作.xml
11 KB (or around) file should be renamed 行動.xml
Okay, so I saw a meme on :icontimmythevampirepuppy:'s  journal and decided to have Byaku do it.

Byaku: Dear :iconienvyhomunculus:,
I don't really know how to say this, but I'm in love with your cat. I think I realized it Last year when you peed your pants In your car and I saw you Sit on my Salt-beef bucket. I'm sure you're Open enough to understand That your driving sucks. I'm returning The couch cushions, but keeping Your virginity as a memory. You should also know that I get sick when I think of your feet and you should stop picking your nose. Please, don't lick my inner thighs anymore.

I urge you to do this meme as well!
I saw it timmythevampirepuppy.deviantar… here.

Okay, so there are some of you who are curious about the shimejis I have. I will list them right here along with their creators. OH MY GOD I HAVE AROUND 80 DIFFERENT SHIMEJIS!

To those that keep asking: I will provide a way to download the wheatley shimeji off of my dA
Simply follow this link: www.mediafire.com/?xkidl1re5n2…
Now: bear in mind, because the folder had to be compressed into a zip file, it may not work properly.
To fix this, go into the conf folder and rename the 45kb file to 動作 and the 9kb file to 行動
If this fails to work, simply copy-paste all the files in the img folder to a different img folder in a duplicate of a shimeji you have already gotten to work, and that should solve any problems.

Happy now? ;w;
