1. Art is Personal

Every day, daily deviations are featured, artist interviews are posted, and countless journals of thumbnails published.  Every single day, community members, volunteers and staff, all come together and share in a love of art. It doesn't always go well and sometimes a piece of artwork I adore, strikes the wrong chord with someone. However, regardless of the message received the artwork achieved the goal of becoming personal and striking an emotion and there are no rules that state this emotion should always be happy and fluffy. I'm personally inspired by a different kind of image, one that challenges my feelings and ideals and sometimes, ones that make me uncomfortable. It was 1995, at the Guggenheim in New York City, that I stumbled across the work of Joel- Peter Witkin.  It was his work that inspired me to pick up a camera but to say that his work is globally appealing, would not be valid.  For me, it was the beginning of a great journey that would eventually lead me to this community.  For others, I imagine they would rather not view his work, as its controversial and uncomfortable for them.

As an artist, my art is very personal.  Every image I create tells a story and what I've learned is that even when I feel the intent or message is obvious, it might be completely lost on someone else.  Does that make them stupid? not at all, it just means that my art spoke to them differently and that happens for a number of reasons. It could be about what they were feeling that day or it could be speaking to something that happened in their past or it could very well be the paragon of their greatest fear and while it is my artwork and my intention, there is nothing wrong with someone else seeing something completely different.

Every day I look through comments on articles or Daily Deviations and I'm always amazed by how vastly different the opinions are.  Some people love it and others absolutely hate it, some feel it's about one thing while another is on a completely different track.  The point is that these feelings are all valid and, assuming the commenter has shared their feelings respectfully, there's nothing wrong with that.

If a piece of artwork manages to elicit an emotion - be it positive or negative - in my opinion, it has more than earned it's place.  If you feel differently, that's okay.  No one will react to one piece of artwork the same way.  In fact, you could probably go back through you favourites gallery and look at selections you made years ago, and find those pieces may not make you feel the same way about them as they did at the time.

Conversely, if your piece of artwork manages to accumulate a wealth of negativity,  remember the silver lining - Your art made people feel -  Then pat yourself on the back and go create your next masterpiece.

Art is a personal journey of mind, body and soul - both to create and to experience and we'd all do better as a community to consider that.

Feel free to share your favourite artists or pieces of artwork in the comments below :) I'd love to see the variety of tastes and styles that exist in our community!

1. Miscats, Miscats, Miscats

Misplaced deviations (miscats) appear to be the bane of our existence.  There's nothing more annoying then browsing your favourite photography gallery and coming across a flashing gif, or perusing through your favourite traditional art gallery and finding a blatant digital art piece.  I know this, because the number of "misplaced deviation" reports are staggering.  It's obvious that some people have made it their sole purpose at deviantART to scour through the galleries and while I appreciate that dedication to organization - I have to tell you the problem is bigger than a simple manual move.

With over 284 million pieces of art across over 3,000 categories, the problem cannot be solved by a few people with move tools.  While it's absolutely gratifying to clean something up, the manual method is a one-way ticket to insanity, for those involved.

So what's to be done? In the past we've tried many methods, most of which involved manual efforts on the part of volunteers and staff, and the end result has always been the same.  It's too big without technology.  We need a better solution.  I want to convey that this frustration is felt by everyone, from the community, to the volunteers to the staff. We are all united in our distaste for miscats.  That being said, a solution is not a fast fix and will take time to think through and develop.

In the interim, a team of volunteers, staff and myself will be banding together as a unified team, to sweep specific galleries, one at a time.  While I stand by my earlier point that it's an un-winnable war, we're going to treat this as a team building exercise and have some fun with it while sharing in the joy of cleaning up a little.

During these sweeps, we will concentrate on one gallery and we will be trying to educate those that are putting their artwork in the wrong place. There are several reasons that art ends up in the wrong category:

1. There are so many categories it's overwhelming and people get confused.
2. The names and descriptions are in English and not everyone speaks English as a first language
3. People just don't care enough to bother.

While we're powerless against those that don't want to make an effort, we do have the ability to educate and inform the rest, and that's what we're going to focus on.  By engaging groups like InternationalFAQ, we can translate some of our responses, so those that don't speak English as a first language, understand the category system a little better.

The first gallery we will be tackling with be the Tutorials gallery and other's will follow. I will be monitoring the progress to see if the cost of our efforts are worth it.

I cannot stress enough that this is not the solution to the problem.  It's an interim action to try and regain some control over some of our hardest hit categories.  Should you wish to suggest a category for cleanup, please contact the volunteer assigned to that area or note me :)

Thank you!

A Personal Note from Moonbeam13 - I'd like to take a moment to apologize for the delay in publishing this newsletter.  Just as it was coming together, my grandfather took a turn for the worst and things got a little hazy.  He passed away on Friday March 7th and today is my first day back at work. Thank you for your understanding.

1. New Year = New Crazy

2014 took off from the gate like a well-bred thoroughbred and now two months have gone in the blink of an eye.  While I'm not one for resolutions, I did mark down a few goals for myself, such as getting back to posting on my food blog or learning how to sew.  Some of my goals certainly demand that I consciously carve out time for these things or it just never happens.  Life is busy, but sometimes not good busy, just the busy of everyday crazy and I'm finding as I get older, the everyday crazy takes over and you need to say 'STOP' and take some time for yourself.  I recently read an article about this topic and in it this woman had decided to create a list of all those things she wanted to do but never found the time to.  Whether it was a tedious task of sorting something or taking time to knit, all of these 'non-deadline' items were placed onto the list.  She then devoted one hour each week to tackling something on the list.  She referred to it as her 'power hour' and it stuck with me and I've started implementing the 'Power Hour' into my life.  I think it's doable because it's not a huge commitment.  It's an hour a week, you're not giving up a giant chunk of time but it's enough that I feel that I'm accomplishing things, for me.  Maybe in the future I'll have more than one Power Hour in a week :D

So a couple of questions for you!

1. Did you make any resolutions/goals for this year? If so, what were they (if you don't mind sharing :))
2. What sort of items would you put on your 'Power Hour' list?

1. Merry New Year

As we get older it always seems to feel like time just flies by and part of that is likely due to us trying to shove a lot of things into a day, something I'm certainly guilty of doing.  I'm not a resolution person, but I am a reflective person.  I use this time to reflect on the year that's passed and what I did, what went well and what went wrong. 2013 was no different, however, it seemed to be a year of challenges for both myself and those around me.  It seemed to be a year of personal difficulties and the feeling of constantly climbing insurmountable mountains (ironically I also climbed the Great Wall of China in 2013 so there's that)  There were other highlights as well and with that here's just a few of the things that went down in 2013:

:bulletpink: At the beginning of 2013 we introduced Commissions a way for content creators to generate real earnings through custom creations.

:bulletpink: deviantART introduced Undiscovered a feature I still refer to as a favourite of mine :) I continue to find things I never would have found without it :)

:bulletpink: We introduced the mention system and implemented new user symbols

:bulletpink: We turned 13! Which incidentally is my favourite number ;)

I encourage your continued feedback regarding the site and its features as it helps guide us with improvements and fixes.

With that I'm challenging you to reflect a little yourself and leave the responses in the comments below:

  1. What was your highlight for the last year? (deviantART related or not, list as many as you like :))
  2. Which feature/change or improvement would you like to see in 2014 (List below and link examples or visuals if applicable)

I want to thank you for continuing to be the biggest and best community out there and sharing your thoughts and opinions (even the loud ones!!) on a regular basis.  YOU make this community what it is and I thank you a million times for letting me be a part of that.  The deviantART Community will always be home for me. I'm looking forward to what 2014 brings and I am grateful that we get to do that together!

1. Volunteering

Once upon a time, I was a volunteer, and speaking from experience, it can be a both blessing and a curse.

I believe that many current and former volunteers will agree with that sentiment and I feel it's important to explain a bit about why I believe this to be true.

Maybe you're not aware of the variety of ways people join the volunteer team.  As per FAQ #85: Can I be a volunteer on deviantART? many people send in an application to express their interest in joining the team and I go through those applications and select people I feel would benefit not only the team and the community but also, benefit from the experience.  However, aside from those applications, I also have a habit of hand-picking people based on personalities or traits I've gleaned that I believe would be beneficial to everyone involved and see if they are interested.

I have brought people onto the team after turning them down multiple times because I didn't feel they were ready and gave them advice in regards to areas they needed to improve, because frankly, I was worried about their ability to handle some of the stress that comes with being in the public eye.  If you're one of those people that keeps being passed over and keeps trying anyways - talk to me.  Reach out instead of screaming about the unfairness of my decisions. I'm happy to talk about it and give you pointers but you need to want to have that conversation and you need to be willing to take the advice I provide.

One of the hardest things to deal with as a new volunteer, is the ghost of the volunteer that came before.  Following in someone's footsteps can be intimidating and downright scary.  Every volunteer has brought something to this team and this community regardless of whether they were a 'super' volunteer and did everything under the sun.  The challenge before all of us, is to view everyone as an individual and drop the assumption that every volunteer should be the same and be held to the same crazy standards.

Every volunteer is different. They come to the team with their own strengths, visions, gifts and talents.  They also come with their own view of how best to contribute their time while they are a volunteer and if you take time to read through FAQ #85: Can I be a volunteer on deviantART? you can read examples of how volunteers may choose to spend their time.  By no means are these requirements, they are suggestions and guidelines. Some volunteers will choose to do some of them, some may do all of them and some, may do none of them, but may choose to do other things.  Sometimes involvement is based on their availability and sometimes it's based on strengths, but each person that has joined this team, past and present, has made an effort.

As a community, we can help these volunteers by being supportive instead of judgmental.  Instead of screaming at the new person that they aren't as good as the past person.. how about reaching out, introducing yourself and saying 'so glad you're here! I just wanted to let you know that the community really enjoyed this past activity the previous volunteer used to do and if you could continue it that would be awesome! If you need any help with it, I'd love to help you pull it off!"

Don't attack - assist.

We are a community, and we don't succeed without each other.  We don't grow without nurturing each other.  This works both ways and is outlined in the Core Values upheld by the members of the volunteer team FAQ #84: What are the Core Values of the Community Relations and Operations Departments?.

I write this because I truly believe that we, as a community, need to walk this road together.  So let's ensure the lines of communication are open.  If you want to suggest things, please reach out to your Community Volunteers.  I implore you to get involved in the conversation and always know I'm available to talk to via note or email

1. Gallery Makeover Project

First, thank you for all of your feedback concerning Gallery Makeovers! That information is being sorted and organized and I'll be working on one gallery at a time going forward.  Recently, we announced the changes to the Journal Category tree and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.  I have been collecting feedback from the announcement for future consideration when it comes to future gallery additions.  At this time, I will be monitoring the changes and should we need to add more categories, we can certainly do that.  It's easier to add than take away, as this project is certainly proving :

I'm currently organizing a plan of attack for the rest of the galleries, a schedule if you will.  Once that's been sorted out, I will certainly announce what is being worked on and how, so the community is informed :) Nothing will be a surprise, as you know, we've come to these plans together with feedback from you.  Simplification and ease of submission is the end goal and while it will take some time, I think we all believe it's well worth the effort.

1. Happy Holidays and Merry New Year

As the old year begins to fade into the sunset, it is customary to reflect on the passing year and make plans for the upcoming one.  Some do this in the form of resolutions, some people make action plans, some people just swing into the new year the same way they swung out of the old one :) Whatever way you intend to welcome in 2013, I hope you're surrounded by love and that you do it safely!

I've been reflecting on the year and like many, with some focus on the unimaginable events of the last few weeks. Specifically, the shooting in Newtown.  I know that it's "human nature" to want to find answers but I find the media coverage to be brutal.  Let's be honest, we could have the attackers themselves explain the 'why' and it still wouldn't make sense.  You can't make sense of the senseless.

Regardless, I wept when I heard of these events and I believe I'm not alone. The sorrow was felt around the world and I'm sure the new year will bring on many gun debates and discussions, some of which have already started.  I'm not here to talk about gun laws and policies, I want to talk about the power of community and being better humans.

In the wake of the events, Ann Curry of NBC News wrote:

Newtown's heartbreak has a lot of us asking, "What can I do?" Thinking about this, I took to Twitter and asked people to imagine what would happen if all of us committed to 20 acts of kindness to honor each child lost in Newtown. I added, "I'm in. If you are, RT #20Acts."
Tens of thousands of people on Twitter and Facebook not only seized the idea, they increased it to #26Acts, to include the heroic teachers, and are launching acts of kindness big and small all over America. The acts are spreading overseas, including one tweeted from Borneo.

Certainly the idea of Random Acts of Kindness and Paying it Forward are not new notions but ones we need to be reminded of.  The deviantART community is especially amazing at things like this.  From the simple acts of participating in the community to critiquing or collecting someone's artwork.  From buying someone a premium membership to donating to someone's cause.  I'm always wowed by the lengths members of the community are willing to go for, all intents and purposes, complete strangers.

Throughout the year, we upset each other, we get angry at each other and feel like we just aren't being listened to.  Whether it's members of the community, staff, volunteers or senior members - we've all found ourselves feeling like we're on the opposite side of the fence. What I have come to realize over the years is that the main motivator for how voracious these 'debates' can be, is our shared love of the deviantART community.  We may not always agree on the ways to care and nurture for it but we are all coming from a place of love and protection for something we hold dear.

That's a great realization but what do we do about it? Well there's no one answer or I'd have suggested it years ago :D but what I can tell you is what I'm going to do.  First, I totally participated in #26acts and I plan on continuing to participate in working in random acts of kindness into my days going forward.  I'm going to learn to be a better listener, I tend to multi-task and I'm not going to do that when someone is trying to talk to me.  I'm also going to practice forgiveness.  I am not infallible and let's be honest, carrying around a grudge is exhausting. I'm also going to try to be more patient - this one is going to be a challenge :D It's time to start over, rebuild and renew :) I have placed my 'resolutions' for you all to see so that you will help hold me accountable and hopefully join me

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below about how you think we can improve the 'community' in the deviantART community.  What would you like to see more of? Less of? Do you have any resolutions, if so what are they?

I wish you a safe and blessed holiday and hope you're spending it with people you love. I look forward to spending an amazing 2013 with you all.

Merry Yule

2. Daily Deviations: Listing Suggesters

As a team, we receive hundreds of Daily Deviation suggestions a day.  As a team, we endeavor to go through those in a timely manner and some of those go on to become some of the Daily Deviations you see highlighted on any given day.  When we select a DD via a suggestion, we add the name of the suggester into the selection tool.  Occasionally, the image has been suggested to us by more than one person and when that's obvious, we may choose to include both people who suggested the piece.  More often than not, this just isn't possible.  It's not possible to remember every single image we've seen and include every single person who felt it should be a Daily Deviation.  In the past, it would seem that some people on our team have chosen to edit a Daily Deviation to add a suggester, this practice just simply doesn't make sense.  We will continue to include the first suggester of the Daily Deviation and occasionally, multiple suggesters if it's possible but at the end of the day, the Daily Deviation is about the artist being featured, not about who found it.  We do everything in our power to be fair and represent the community in a positive way, however, I've recently been getting complaints that someone sent in a suggestion and someone else was listed as a suggester, and some of these comments are really unkind.  Please consider the sheer amount of feedback my team get and remind yourself that Daily Deviations are a feature of Artwork.  If you're upset because you didn't get your name in the suggester box and really need to talk to someone about it, please do not harass my volunteers.  Please note myself or email me at Moonbeam13@deviantart.com Thank you.
