I made a small selection and you can search for much, much more. Just go to the Main Page and search by Resources > Application Resources > Photoshop Brushes. There's a whole dA world of brushes for you to explore. Have fun!

Tip - in case you want a specific brush, try to search for it in the the Search Bar (example: Hair Brushes -> Go). A whole list of that specific category will show in front of your eyes!

Hello. I am here to talk about how to download brushes for Photoshop and how to create brushes on Photoshop.

Downloading brushes for Photoshop

There are many types of brush presets already in Photoshop, once you launch it for the first time. They range from the Round Brush tool to the famous Scattered Maple Leaves brush. But there comes a time when you want to expand your horizon and try new brushes for the Photoshop Program. But there are a range of questions asked frequently such as

  • Where can you find these types of free brushes
  • How do you download brushes from the internet
  • How do you install them into Photoshop?

Where you can go to download free Photoshop Brushes

There are many resources to help you download Photoshop Brushes

and there are many more sites you can go on to get some great brushes to use.

How do you download brushes from the internet?

  • For deviantArt, find the download section on your right and click the download button.
  • For many other sites, click on the preview thumbnail on the brushes, and on the (right next to the picture), you should find the download button.

How do you install the brushes to your Photoshop?

Open your Photoshop and look at your tool bar and go the the brush tool. Once you open that section click the gear and then you'll see multiple options. Scroll down and find the Load Brushes option. Go to either downloads or wherever you save brushes and click you brush and click load. Then your brush should be added to your brush presets.

Brush Tool by iingo Click Here by iingo Load by iingoAbr Ae by iingo Brushes by iingo

You can adjust these brushes anyway you like such as the round brush tools. However this varies on whatever Photoshop use.

Creating brushes

I actually found to different methods towards creating brushes; however, one you can save and the other way you cannot.

Creating a brush using the Define Brush Preset

This is an easy method actually but not many people could figure it out.
  • Open a white or transparent canvas. (I would suggest opening a white canvas that way you can see what you're drawing easier in case you're adjusting the brush)
  • Create another layer (very important)
  • Draw whatever you want to create a brush of. EX: 3 Dots
    • 3 Dots by iingo
  • Go to Edit
  • Scroll down until you see the Define Brush Preset Option
  • Define by iingo
  • Then a brush name setting should appear and click ok to save the brush 3 Dots Pre by iingo
  • Your drawing should then appear as a brush at the bottom right corner
    • There by iingo

  • You can customize your brushes anyway.

Using the Mixer Brush Tool

This is the method where you cannot save the brush

  • Go to the Tool Section and click the tiny triangle that's next to the brush tool and then you'll see an option called Mixer Brush.
  • Click the Mixer Brush Option
    • Mixer Brush by iingo : The mixer brush is a tool to help you blend your strokes
      • There are multiple options towards using this brush though. The mixer brush is a brush where it can be used like a watercolor or acrylic paint brush where you can either have a heavy load of paint or a low amount of paint. When using this brush you can also change it to being either dry, moist or wet.
  • Let's make a brush using a pink sphere. REMEMBER, MAKE ANOTHER LAYER BEFORE YOU CREATE A BRUSH TO USE.
    • Brsu by iingo

    • Make your mixer brush hover over your painted layer. Make sure your brush size fits the painted layer
    • Hold the Alt button and then click.
    • At the top horizontal tool bar, you should see your painted layer inside the brush preview. Make sure you're on heavy load for moist, dry, wet, or custom. That way, you can use the brush for a long time. If you're on little load or no load at all, you'll only be able to you the brush for a bit because it lacks paint.
    • ,k, by iingo
    • Then draw what you want and then you should be able to use your brush.

      Heart by iingo
  • Using the Mixer brush is great for making realistic trees, flowers, clouds or anything you want. Just make sure you know what option of load you're on.

I hope this tutorial helped you out in a way to make brushes and download brushes for Photoshop.

PE: Textured brushes

Thu Apr 4, 2013, 6:44 AM

This article is an introduction to textured brushes in digital art painting. I'll cover making your own brushes as well as the use of textured brushes. You'll also find some great art and brush sets at the end of this article. This is my first time writing for projecteducate, so I hope you'll find this helpful!

:bulletblue:Textured brush vs. texture
First of all, what is a textured brush? And why should you bother with it when you can just slap a nice texture over your painting to make it look more interesting?

marble texture by Riemea

Textured brush:

custom textured brush by Riemea

Alright, let's start at the beginning. "Textured brush" is a brush created out of a texture, so basically a texture in brush-form. Whether it's made with help of a pre-existing image (see texture above) or some wild scribbling on your tablet (like the example brush above) doesn't matter. Texture + select + define brush = textured brush! More on how that process works later.
So, why bother with textured brushes in the first place? Some thoughts on the matter:

1) Searching for the right texture
Using a texture means you have to search for it first. Whether you have photographed your own or depend on the resources others provide you have to search for the right one. To find the one image that doesn't make your character's face look like sandpaper when you don't intend it to can be harder than you might think. Using someone else's textures (or brushes for that matter) leads us to the next problem.

2) The credit problem
Unless you made the texture or textured brushes yourself you always have to credit the artist who made them! Even if they explicitely state that you don't have to I think it's only fair to do so. You're honouring their effort this way, and more people might get to know about the resources you thought helpful enough to use them to create your artwork.
Another thing is that you can't just use someone's random photo of the sky. If they haven't labelled their photo as stock you'd also have to ask their permission to use it first (everything else would be stealing).

3) Improving your artistic skills
When painting, say, a desert, simply painting a sea of yellow and brown, and using texture of sand to make it look like sand, is the easy way out. That way, you might learn something about (Photoshop) filters and blending modes, but not how to draw a desert. Because you didn't draw it, you substituted drawing with slapping a photo over your image. It's not that using a textured brush would be that hard either, it's just a brush after all, only one that can create amazing effects! It's fun and you can achieve the effects you want much easier, because you have direct control over it.

:bulletblue:Creation of custom textured brushes
Since making your own fancy custom texture brushes is way more fun than simply using presets or someone else's, here are 3 easy steps that will lead to your shiny new brush:

1) Open a new canvas (in whatever programm you use, I use Photoshop CS2 (German version)). You can simply use the standard settings.

2) Open a new layer (transparency is important for this whole endeavor). Take your super plain standard round brush and scribble away! Combine dots, straight lines and random wavy lines, and try to keep the whole mess vaguely brush-shaped.

Textured Brushes Tut Screencap4 by Riemea

3) Use your favourite selection tool to select your scribble and open the 'Edit' menu. Choose 'Define Brush' next. A window should open where you can name your new brush. And that's it! You can now select your shiny new brush and experiment with the settings; go crazy and have fun with it!

Textured Brushes PE article image 2 by Riemea

Here are three more ways to make custom textured brushes (with settings changes, from pre-existing textures and creating "natural brushes"):
:Textured Brush Tutorial: by RezwanaDimech    Texture 222 - Step by Step by Sirius-sdz    Making Natural Brushes for PS by Duffzilla

In case you caught the brush-making-fever: Here are some brushes you could try making, as well as examples on what they could look like (made by yours truly):
    1. Great brush for soft shading and blending
    2. Nice brush for traditional looking lines
    3. Good brush for skin texture

Textured Brushes Tut Screencap7 by Riemea

:bulletblue:Some guidelines on using textured brushes
That's all well and good you might think, but what about using those fancy brushes now? I have a set of 20 super-mega-awesome brushes, so I'll just go and use as many of them as possible in my next painting, right? Wrong.

Part of the magic is knowing (pretending to know) which brush to use for what, so that you don't overdo it. But how should I know that?? Simple answer: Experiment. Let's take the brushes I have up there as examples. How could I know the third one would be good for adding texture to skin? Well, I tried it out. I played with the settings a bit, tried to use it on hair, skin, clothes, background, basically everything. What I found out was, that brushes with such shape - let's call them "speckled brushes" - are helpful for painting skin and hair. Clothes and outlines not so much, at least not in my stlye. And that's why experimenting with your own brushes on your own pictures is so important. I for example love that brush #1 up there, but you might find it completely useless. How would you know? Well, not through staring at it in front of your computer.

And when you finally finished going through that list of 20 brushes you had in the beginning you might find yourself with only 6 left. And that's good, because that means a) a pretty managable and extensible list of brushes and b) you're less likely to overload your painting with texture, since you already have some experience with your new brushes and can guess where to use them best. And you hopefully had lots of fun with creating these brushes and trying them out ;)

Some brush sets you might find helpful for your new adventures in texture (remember to credit when you use them!):

As a thank you, we've awarded all previous brush pack purchasers with an exclusive "Brush Lover" Profile Page badge.  Again, thank you for your support.

Unlock your artistic talent today

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

deviantART muro Brushes Are Now Free!

deviantART muro, our cutting edge in-browser drawing tool, offers a variety of different brushes for use in creating digital paintings. In the past, we've offered some brushes for free, and others as part of premium brush packs. We're happy to announce that from today onward, we're offering all brushes for free.

Text Brush in deviantART muro (Beta Testers)

We launched a new tool to Beta Testers that allows you to paint words onto your canvas in deviantART muro!

A New deviantID

Over the course of the next few days, we'll be moving forward and transferring everyone on site over to the new deviantID widget. This widget, originally launched to beta testers in 2011 and made available to deviants early on in 2012, is designed to help deviants present themselves as artists or art appreciators, while also making it easy for other deviants to find common interests.

The deviantID widget lets you display information about yourself, your interests, and an image of what you feel represents you, all from one sleek box on your page!

New deviantART Twitter Accounts

Last week we added two new accounts to our network of automated Twitter accounts. We added @deviantARTdd, which tweets Daily Deviations and @dA_journals, which tweets popular Journals.

Get daily inspirational artwork delivered straight to your Twitter feed! Even when you're away from deviantART, you can stay inspired while keeping a pulse on the deviantART community.

These accounts were created to give deviantART members more exposure by increasing traffic and visibility to audiences outside of the deviantART community. They tweet recently popular deviations in a given category. If the artist has a Twitter account, their Twitter username will be included in the tweet, giving the artist's Twitter account extra exposure. Twitter usernames are pulled from the Twitter Widget on your profile. Premium Members, if you haven't already installed it, you may want to do this.

Conversation in Notes
One of many ways in which messaging has developed online in the recent past is the conversation view for personal messages (e.g. how Facebook messages are displayed). What are your thoughts in regard to conversation-type layouts for personal messages? Do you find them easy to navigate or organize? If you don't like a conversation style of layout, what sort of layout do you prefer for your personal messages?
