For PearlFor Pearl8 years ago in Free Verse
You see me every day and you are silent.
I fly proudly for the ones I loved and you do not care.
I was there when they bombed us. You ran.
I held my own at Iwo Jima in revenge. You watched.
I saw my beloved Arizona. You gazed as she fell.
I held my fighting soldiers. You swam away.
I fought for you in Okinawa and Midway. You wept.
I served them well on that morning. You understood.
I stood by your side, and you smiled at me.
I was held in your hands, and you caressed my face.
I am your brother, your sister, the one you hold most dear.
I am the one they fear, praise, hate, and love.
I leapt for my Utah, my Nevada, my Oklahoma.
You hold me high and I shall fly again.
My name is the Star-Spangled Banner and your honor is mine.
I hold your hand so we may die a beautiful death for Pearl.
