There were nights when it was easier. He could lay awake, staring at the light on the ceiling of his apartment, reflections from the cars that passed by on the street below, soft rumbles like distant waterfalls from the life he lived once a very long time ago. There were nights he could roll onto his side, wrapped in a blanket and let his brain slip away, think of thoughts and distant memories that comforted him and stopped the shaking of his soul for a brief while.
Those nights were nice. They were warm, soft, and comforting. A tiny, candle flicker of hope at the end of a very dark, very long tunnel. The smallest grasp that someday, things would be different.
However, most nights, were not easy. Most nights, the memories were full and painful. He would curl into a ball and sob, his face half buried in his pillow, wails shaking his body like a great tremor of the earth. Muscles aching, ribs breaking, eyes red and swollen, crying.
The memories never left him, and they played through his
