For those who've forgotten, allow me to remind you. American Gods posits the gods, monsters and so forth of myth, legend, religion and folklore are real, made manifest simply by the sheer power of concentrated human belief. Many of the Old World supernaturals were carried by their peoples who had immigrated to America, and for a time they thrived in the new land. Then, as the years went by, as the number of their followers dwindled...they waned.
The gods have weakened, reduced to shadows of their former selves. In the modern day, they struggle to get by in a land that - in reality - has no time and no care for old gods.
