Project Implicit is an ongoing study conducted by Harvard University that investigates unconscious thoughts and feelings that exist outside of conscious control. In a series of rapid association tests known as Implicit Association Tests, users are asked to connect different genders, races, weight classes and religions with a variety of positive and negative categories. In one round, “black” will be categorized with “good.” In the next “black” will be listed with “bad.” Pictures of weapons, drugs and violence are displayed along with various faces.

Whether we like it or not, most of us—white, black, purple or green—are inherently prejudice. Some people prefer skinny people to fat people, some associate minorities with violent crimes and some connect women with the kitchen.
These, of course, are implicit thoughts, the things we may not believe consciously, but unconsciously control how people are perceived on a day-to-day basis. In light of certain Vine-related remarks made the other week, many have focused their attention on external racism, a fight that, ultimately, is a lost cause. No amount of disciplinary action will end prejudice and stereotyping. Punishment only teaches society to keep their mouths shut. To fight the on-going battle on racism, it’s our thoughts, not our words, that need to be manipulated.

In one round, “black” will be categorized with “good.” In the next “black” will be listed with “bad.” Pictures of weapons, drugs and violence are displayed along with various faces.
Using two keys, the user is expected to put things in their rightful category as quickly as they can. A picture of a gun, for instance, might be put in the “bad” category (although I’m sure some others would argue differently). If “bad” and “black” are paired together, the study demonstrates that most users, including black people, are quicker to put the picture in the right category. Since the study began in 1998, results have implied that the majority of Americans, regardless of race or background, have the same biases. The tests reveal our society’s preference for light skin over dark skin, young over old and men over women. The root of these prejudices, many would argue, is what we see on television.
This past April, Eric Deggans, a Tampa Bay Times TV and media critic, took a glimpse at racial injustice with journalism students at the University of Tampa. In the middle of the discussion, he gave the students a pop-quiz about race in America. “True or False: There are more blacks in prison than in college.” The image was presented on a PowerPoint slide of a young black male behind bars. The students, incorrectly, answered the question as true. Deggans noted that images are what most of your audience is going to absorb. If this is true, than how does television mold our impressions of one another?
Whether it’s on the news, in film or in writing, stereotypes are all around us. This is because stereotypes, particularly on the news, are a self-fulfilling prophecy. Media imitates real life and real life similarly imitates media. In a 2009 study, psychologists at North Carolina State University in Raleigh tested the stereotype that old people have faulty memories. As reported in the journal Experimental Aging Research, seniors aged 60 to 82 were given a recall test. To trigger the stereotype, half the group was told the test would examine the effect of aging on memory. The other half was assured that age-related bias was removed from the exam. The first group fulfilled the stereotype.
“Older adults will perform more poorly on a memory test if they are told that older folks do poorly on that particular type of memory test,” said Professor Tom Hess. Senior citizens who think older people should perform poorly on tests of memory actually score much worse than seniors who do not. “That take home message,” Hess said, “is that social factors may have a negative effect on [performance].”
So society is shaped by the media, which is shaped by the politics, which is shaped by society in a never-ending circle of unconscious dislike. To combat this, opportunities like this Vine fiasco should be used to raise consciousness of the unconscious and promote discussion between races. We’re too focused on what this individual did wrong and not what it says about our society. In a wonderful letter written to the FSView, BSU President, Harold Scott, said “We only lose such ignorance as we come more exposed to the reality.” We’re all prejudice—some of us openly—and this is a battle that has many, many years left in it. The key to defeating racism is focusing not on what makes races different, but what makes us the same.

The television show is presently being rerun on the Encore-Western channel.
Have Gun -- Will Travel was created by Sam Rolfe and Herb Meadow and produced by Frank Pierson, Don Ingalls, Robert Sparks, and Julian Claman. There were 225 episodes of the TV series, 24 written by Gene Roddenberry. Other contributors included Bruce Geller, Harry Julian Fink, Don Brinkley and Irving Wallace. Andrew McLaglen directed 101 episodes[2][3] and 19 were directed by series star Richard Boone. Originally, each show opened with exactly the same 45-second visual. Over a slow four-note-repeat backbeat score, a tight shot of a silver chess knight emblem centered in a black background is shown. The view widens to show that the knight is actually an emblem affixed onto the black pistol holster of a gunman, clad entirely in black, who is standing with right side to the camera, and his left hand in the pistol belt.
Only his midsection, showing the full gun holster, is seen. Paladin's right hand then slowly draws the weapon, a Western revolver, from the holster, leisurely cocks it, and then rotates it to point the barrel exactly at the viewer, for 10 seconds. During this time, Paladin delivers a pointed line of dialogue from the coming episode (since the speaker's face is never seen, this is possible to do with the same visual in each episode). Then the pistol is uncocked and reholstered with an angry brusqueness, emphasizing the previous "teaser" statement.
As soon as the weapon is reholstered, the view again tightens to show only the chess knight, and "RICHARD BOONE in HAVE GUN -- WILL TRAVEL" appears. This leads into the show's theme music. In the actual episode that followed, the line delivered at gunpoint in the opening sequence is often not delivered with exactly the same intonation or phrasing. There are a few cases where the teaser line does not occur in the story at all: In Season 1's "No Visitors;" Season 2's "The Wager," and "Lady on the Stagecoach."

Tallahassee, FL - Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground self defense law got its first legislative review today since first passed 2005. Even minor changes are being met with concern.
The original author of stand your ground made it clear: “It is an excellent common sense law, but it’s not perfect,” says Sen. David Simmons, R-Altamonte Springs.

When neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin, he was sent home under the belief that Police were powerless to investigate stand your ground claims. The compromise legislation fixes that. “We have, not only the obligation but a desire to get to the bottom… We are fact finders,” says Larry Ashley, Okaloosa County Sheriff, FL Sheriffs Assn.
The legislation also clarifies that aggressors and law breakers can’t assert Stand Your Ground. “You can’t rely upon self-defense if you are the person who provokes the use of force,” says Sen. Simmons.
The NAACP, which prefers an outright repeal told lawmakers. “It’s harder for black defendants to assert stand your ground defense if the victim is white, and easier for whites to raise if the stand your ground defense, if the victims are black,” says Kim Keenan, NAACP Legal Counsel.
The Committee voted 7-2 to approve the changes.
The NRA says the legislation misses its mark. “Yes, we’re Luke warm, we don’t think it does a lot of good, but in its current state, we don’t think it does a lot of harm, although there’s potential,” says Marion Hammer, Unified Sportsmen of FL.
Still to be worked out is whether law enforcement will be required to train for just-issued guidelines to neighborhood watch groups.
The legislation also limits immunity for someone using force, which signals trouble ahead for the proposed changes.

Have Gun -- Will Travel is an American Western television series that aired on CBS from 1957 through 1963. It was rated number three or number four in the Nielsen ratings every year of its first four seasons.[1] It was one of the few television shows to spawn a successful radio version. The radio series debuted November 23, 1958.

Andrew McLaglen directed 101 episodes[2][3] and 19 were directed by series star Richard Boone. Originally, each show opened with exactly the same 45-second visual. Over a slow four-note-repeat backbeat score, a tight shot of a silver chess knight emblem centered in a black background is shown. The view widens to show that the knight is actually an emblem affixed onto the black pistol holster of a gunman, clad entirely in black, who is standing with right side to the camera, and his left hand in the pistol belt.
Only his midsection, showing the full gun holster, is seen. Paladin's right hand then slowly draws the weapon, a Western revolver, from the holster, leisurely cocks it, and then rotates it to point the barrel exactly at the viewer, for 10 seconds. During this time, Paladin delivers a pointed line of dialogue from the coming episode (since the speaker's face is never seen, this is possible to do with the same visual in each episode). Then the pistol is uncocked and reholstered with an angry brusqueness, emphasizing the previous "teaser" statement.
As soon as the weapon is reholstered, the view again tightens to show only the chess knight, and "RICHARD BOONE in HAVE GUN -- WILL TRAVEL" appears. This leads into the show's theme music. In the actual episode that followed, the line delivered at gunpoint in the opening sequence is often not delivered with exactly the same intonation or phrasing. There are a few cases where the teaser line does not occur in the story at all: In Season 1's "No Visitors;" Season 2's "The Wager," and "Lady on the Stagecoach."

Tallahassee, FL - Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground self defense law got its first legislative review today since first passed 2005. Even minor changes are being met with concern.
The original author of stand your ground made it clear: “It is an excellent common sense law, but it’s not perfect,” says Sen. David Simmons, R-Altamonte Springs.

When neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin, he was sent home under the belief that Police were powerless to investigate stand your ground claims. The compromise legislation fixes that. “We have, not only the obligation but a desire to get to the bottom… We are fact finders,” says Larry Ashley, Okaloosa County Sheriff, FL Sheriffs Assn.
The legislation also clarifies that aggressors and law breakers can’t assert Stand Your Ground. “You can’t rely upon self-defense if you are the person who provokes the use of force,” says Sen. Simmons.
The NAACP, which prefers an outright repeal told lawmakers. “It’s harder for black defendants to assert stand your ground defense if the victim is white, and easier for whites to raise if the stand your ground defense, if the victims are black,” says Kim Keenan, NAACP Legal Counsel.
The Committee voted 7-2 to approve the changes.
The NRA says the legislation misses its mark. “Yes, we’re Luke warm, we don’t think it does a lot of good, but in its current state, we don’t think it does a lot of harm, although there’s potential,” says Marion Hammer, Unified Sportsmen of FL.
Still to be worked out is whether law enforcement will be required to train for just-issued guidelines to neighborhood watch groups.
The legislation also limits immunity for someone using force, which signals trouble ahead for the proposed changes.
